Travis Hunter On If He Has A Position Preference In The NFL: ‘I Don’t Pick’

It goes without saying, Travis Hunter is a once-in-a-generation prospect.

There’s really no argument about it – Hunter is the Shohei Ohtani of football, excelling at both the wide receiver and cornerback positions. The 21-year-old won the Heisman Trophy during his final season with the Colorado Buffaloes after recording 92 receptions for 1,152 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns along with recording four interceptions on the defensive end.

Hunter’s stellar play on both sides of the ball not only landed him the Heisman Trophy, it landed him the Fred Biletnikoff Award — awarded to the best receiver in the country — and the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the best defensive player in the nation. He appeared in 84% of Colorado’s snaps during the 2024 season, appearing on 86.8% of the offensive snaps and 82.9% of the defensive snaps.

While Hunter has said he wants to play both positions in the NFL, he says he has no preference if he’s forced to pick one.

“I don’t pick,” Hunter says in a one-on-one interview when asked if he prefers one position over the other.

Hunter is regarded as the top prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he may go No. 2 to the Cleveland Browns or No. 3 to the New York Giants. That’s because the team with the No. 1 overall pick, the Tennessee Titans, are in desperate need of a franchise quarterback and have held multiple workouts and meetings with Cam Ward, a Heisman Trophy runner-up.

The dual-threat star player says he’s not worried about whether he’s the No. 1 pick or where he’s drafted, saying it’s not within his control.

“It’s not in my hands,” says Hunter. “It’s up in the air. Whichever team comes and gets me and believes in me, I’m going to make sure I give them my all.”

Hunter has previously said he would love to play 100% of the offensive and defensive snaps, but he’ll ultimately play whichever role or position that his NFL team wants him to play. In other words, whether Hunter plays a dual-threat role in the NFL largely hinges on where he lands.

It’s worth noting that at Colorado’s recent Pro Day, Hunter only ran wide receiver drills and didn’t run any defensive back drills. The Heisman Trophy winner says neither position is more physically taxing than the other. In other words, Hunter is giving no indication that he prefers playing one position over the other heading into the draft.

”I don’t think there’s a position that’s more taxing,” says Hunter. “I just go out there and play football. A lot of people say it’s kind of difficult to do both, but for me, I’ve been doing it my whole life. So I don’t think it’s difficult. I just go out there and play.”

There hasn’t been an NFL player to play on both sides of the ball full time since Bednarik in the 1960’s. Hunter would pull off something truly revolutionary if he were to play both offense and defense in the NFL. He would be the first one in the modern era to excel on both sides as he’s considered the top wide receiver and cornerback entering this year’s draft.

In keeping true with his tune leading into the draft, Hunter keeps everything neutral when the topic is centered around playing wide receiver or cornerback in the NFL. When asked if there’s a bigger thrill in catching a touchdown pass or intercepting one, Hunter says the goal is to get into the end zone. If he can pick off a pass and score a touchdown, that’s the same thrill as catching a touchdown pass.

”The main goal is to get the ball in the end zone,” says Hunter. “If I can do that by catching the interception and taking it back for a pick-six or catching a touchdown pass, either way it feels good to me no matter what it is.”

When asked if he has any rookie season objectives, Hunter keeps it blunt and simple, saying he has no concrete objectives entering his first year.

“Nah, no key objectives,” says Hunter. “Just to go out there, have fun with the guys and with the team.”
