Tom Brady And Gisele Bündchen Finalize Divorce

Topline

Football star Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen finalized their divorce after 13 years of marriage, the couple announced on social media Friday, ending months of rumors and speculation about the couple’s status.

Key Facts

In a statement shared on Instagram, Brady wrote the couple finalized the split this week, and arrived at the decision to do so “after much consideration” amicably and “with gratitude for the time we spent together.”

In her own statement, Bündchen said “the decision to end a marriage is never easy, but we have grown apart,” and though the choice to divorce was difficult, “I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always.”

Both Bündchen and Brady asked for privacy during this time.

Brady and Bündchen have two children together, Benjamin, 12, and Vivian, 9—Brady also shares his son Jack, 15, with his ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan.

Several outlets reported earlier this month that both Brady and Bündchen hired divorce lawyers, and People reported Friday the couple filed in Florida on Friday with the terms of the divorce already settled.

It’s unclear how the pair will divide their assets, including homes in Florida’s “Billionaire’s Bunker,” Tribeca, Big Sky, Montana and Costa Rica.

Crucial Quote

“We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way,” Brady wrote. “We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.”

Key Background

Brady was the star quarterback for the New England Patriots for two decades, before shocking fans by moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which he led to a Super Bowl victory in 2021. The Brady-Bündchen family moved from Massachusetts to Florida. Earlier this year, Brady briefly announced his time playing football had come to an end, calling his family his “greatest achievement.” Brady also thanked his wife, “who has done EVERYTHING for our family to allow me to focus on my career” and whose “selflessness allowed me to reach new heights professionally.” Weeks later, the athlete recanted and said he would return to the field. In August, rumors about a possible split between the couple kicked into high gear when Brady took an 11-day absence from the Bucs’ training camp for personal reasons. Page Six reported Brady’s decision to return to football caused an “epic fight” between Brady and Bündchen, causing the pair to reportedly live separately, though another source told Page Six that Brady’s short-lived retirement wasn’t the reason for the couple’s ultimate split. Bündchen told Elle in September, “I’ve done my part, which is [to] be there for [Tom]. I moved to Boston, and I focused on creating a cocoon and a loving environment for my children to grow up in and to be there supporting him and his dreams.”

Big Number

Brady earned $83.9 million last year, Forbes estimated, making him the No. 9 highest-paid athlete of 2022. Most of that was made off the field, including from his NFT platform Autograph, his clothing line Brady, his fitness brand TB12 and his production company. His deal to join Fox Sports once his football career ends will reportedly earn him $375 million over 10 years. Bündchen last made Forbes’ list of the 100 highest-paid celebrities in 2016, when she earned $30.5 million. This year, the model and environmentalist became the environmental and community projects advisor to watch company IWC and the environmental and social initiatives advisor to the cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

Tangent

Brady and Bündchen were introduced on a blind date set up by a mutual friend in 2006—shortly before Moynahan confirmed she was pregnant with her ex’s child—and wed in 2009. The three have worked to co-parent Jack. In 2018, Bündchen told People she was “grateful” for Moynahan and considers Jack her “bonus child.” Brady and Bündchen were considered one of the most glamorous celebrity couples. In 2017, the pair co-hosted the Met Gala alongside Pharrell and Katy Perry.
