It’s July 3rd already, which means tomorrow we’ll all be barbequing and waving American flags (made in China) and doing the whole Patriotism Thing.
Don’t get me wrong, I always love the 4th Of July and I consider myself every bit as patriotic as the next guy. I just find the brandishing of myriad flags a little gauche.
But it’s a day for parades and, if you live in a place that isn’t as dry as a tinderbox, fireworks. Unfortunately for your humble narrator, I live in the land of wildfires where fireworks are wisely banned. The trade-off between freedom and safety is never quite so obvious as it is when it comes to flammable things, like ponderosa forests.
In any case, I’m going to have to come up with some patriotic word for tomorrow’s Wordle. Today I went with a really good starting word that ended up helping me get today’s Wordle in just three guesses, which ain’t half bad.
So let’s take a look at today’s Wordle. Some helpful links ahead but feel free to skip on down for the answer and hint.

Today’s Wordle Hint & Answer
But, of course, not without the obligatory spoiler warning. You’ve been warned. Can you dig it?
Now, the hint: One of the loveliest smelling flowers known to humankind.
And the answer is . . . .
See, my hint wasn’t wrong.
There is very little in this world that smells better than the blossoms of a lilac tree. Syringa vulgaris, as it is known by nerdy scientists, comes from the Balkan peninsula but has been spread all across Europe and the Americas. It can be found in the wild here but it’s almost always the result of human habitation. It’s really a lovely flower. Curiously it’s part of the olive family Oleaceae which also includes olive, ash, jasmine, forsythia and privet.
In any case, my first guess creak (as in the door creaked rather than the cool, winding creek) actually ended up being a great opener. On average this cuts down potential solutions to just 137 according to Wordle Bot, but this time I was left with just 8. Nice!
My next guess, focal, only got me one more letter—an ‘L’ in yellow—but it narrowed the possible solutions down to just 2. Of course, I didn’t know this at the time and I admit I found myself in quite the pickle. I ended up guessing that the ‘C’ would be at the end and vocalized the sound that would make—ack—and then did it again with the ‘L’—lack—and that’s what got me to the answer, lilac.
I’m glad the word wasn’t the other option—iliac—because that’s just obscure as hell. It means, relating to the ilium or the nearby regions of the lower body and remember it because someday it will be the Wordle of the day.
Be well, young grasshoppers, and party on. See you on the 4th of July.
Oh, and if you’re a Stranger Things fan check out my review of the two-part Season 4 finale here. I had some issues with it. It wasn’t terrible but it was still a bit of a letdown for many reasons. C’est la vie!
