I’ve been in a bit of a creative rut lately. Writer’s block is a terrible thing. I sit down to write and it’s as if a dump-truck has parked across the road I need to drive down, and whoever’s driving the damn thing has left with the keys. And besides, it’s wedged between two high, brick walls on either side. I could abandon my own car and climb over, but it’s covered in slime and I keep slipping when I try. I could try to crawl under, but this truck is a low-rider and I’m not as thin as I once was.
This is the frustrating thing about writing for a living. When the words stop flowing, and your mind finds itself at a roadblock, there’s not much you can really do. I’ve been playing with Midjourney AI artwork for the past few days, and it’s definitely inspiring stuff when it comes to just letting your imagination run wild. Some of the images I’ve come up with make me want to write stories, using the images as artwork or leaping-off points. But then the words don’t come. I can’t find them. Despair sets in, crawls in through my nostrils, takes up residence in the nooks and crannies of my brain.
I’ve learned that sometimes the best way to combat it is to just write and not to worry if what you type out is any good. Bang away at the keyboard even if you have to drag yourself to it, even if your fingers are heavy and stubborn, and the keys slip and dodge beneath them. But other times it’s best to wait it out. Do other things. Let it pass. Wait until the inspiration returns.
These days I have my daily Wordle column to keep me writing no matter what. Even if I don’t write anything else, I come here and give my brain a stretch. Scrawl a few paragraphs out. Get some thoughts down. Test the waters of my mind. Am I ready to write that Andor review? Something clever about the current season of The White Lotus? Should I drag myself from the confines of my house and go see the new Black Panther movie and write about that? Or Strange Worlds? The new Avatar film maybe?
Maybe. In the meantime, let’s Wordle!
How To Solve Today’s Wordle—Beware Of Spoilers!
The Hint: Adam Sandler fisticuffs with Bob Barker
The Clue: There’s a double-letter in this word.
The Answer:
I guessed badly and then I got lucky. That’s how I’d describe my Wordle approach today. My first guess was fine. Decay got me down to just 85 possible solutions. But then gawky only slashed that to 45. That’s not even in half. I got the ‘A’ in the right spot, but with 44 remaining guesses . . . well I could have done better, as Wordle Bot reminded me.
Of course, I didn’t know I still had 44 guesses left, and when I guessed fanny I didn’t know that left me with 34. I thought I was narrowing in on the answer, but I was actually heading toward my first fail in months (my second fail ever). I was happy when my fourth guess was right on the money, and then kind of shocked that I’d guessed correctly with so many possibilities remaining. Crazy good luck!
Huzzah and hallelujah! Hip hip hooray!
Wordle Bot, despite much better strategy, also took four guesses today. He started with his usual, slate, then guessed corny / debug / happy. Well played, Bot. Well played.
