Well I must say, today’s Wordle was a doozy. Friday is here at last, and with it one of the trickier words this little puzzle game has offered up, at least since I’ve been playing and penning these guides.
Wordle, which launched back in October of 2021 as a pandemic gift for creator Josh Wardle’s wife, remains the internet sensation of 2022—a welcome change from previous viral hits in my book. At least this one gets people thinking.
If you’re new to Wordle, read about the game and how to play here. I also have a Tips & Tricks guide to help you get more correct answers.
You will definitely need to put on your best puzzling cap for today’s Wordle, dear readers. Let’s move on to the hint and the solution.
Today’s Wordle #251 Answer
Remember, we’re going to be discussing the solution to today’s Wordle word of the day, so consider this your one and only spoiler warning. Before we get to the solution, however, let’s start with a hint.
HINT: The answer is crystal clear.
And the answer is . . . .
As you can see, I very nearly didn’t get this one. I had to go out on a proverbial limb for my second to last guess—‘bifid’ is a word referencing plants or animals that are “divided by a deep cleft or notch into two parts” such as a “bifid leaf”—but that’s because my first three entire guesses turned up zero letters.
Partly, that’s just bad luck. Had I picked a word with an ‘I’ I would have gotten at least one letter right.
Partly, it’s a rookie mistake, choosing ‘O’ two times in a row. But in these first three guesses I eliminated so many common letters—S, T, E, A, M, C, L, O, K, H, R, N all out!—my remaining options were limited. Yes, I repeated some letters, naively thinking that it wouldn’t matter too much because surely I’d stumble on something soon enough.
Once I had three letters in the correct spots, and virtually the entire alphabet eliminated, I made one last-ditch guess with vivid and, thankfully, got it right.
Vivid is a uniquely challenging word for one very obvious reason: It has not just one pair of letters but two! There are a total of just three different letters in this five-letter word. It’s not that vivid isn’t a common word that most people are familiar with, it’s the unlikeliness of having two pairs in this scenario. Hey, at least it wasn’t four of a kind!
Thanks for stopping by, my fellow Wordlers. Have a terrific weekend!
