It’s Monday again! It’s actually the second-to-last Monday of the month, since the very last day of July is next Monday. Then it’s August and everything after. We’re well past the halfway point of 2023 already, because time just flies these days.

In any case, I find myself in a hurry so I’ll dispense with preamble and get right to the point. Let’s do this Wordle!

Wordle Bot Analysis

Not a terrible guessing day today, though nothing special. I thought pearl would be a better opener but I wasn’t very lucky, with 354 remaining words to shave down.

Hoist slashed that number to 7, and hound took it down to 3, though I could only think of one: hobby, fortunately, for the win!

Today’s Score

A total wash. Zero points for guessing in 4 and zero points for tying the Bot. Zero! Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “hobby” has an interesting etymology that traces back to the Middle Ages. The term originated in England during the 14th century, and its early form was “hobyn.” It is believed to have derived from the Old French word “hobi,” which referred to a small horse or a pony.

The connection between a small horse and the concept of a hobby is thought to be related to the idea of a “hobby horse.” In medieval times, a hobby horse was a toy horse made of a stick or a similar contraption with a horse’s head attached to it. Children would play with hobby horses and pretend to ride them.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Over time, the meaning of the word “hobby” evolved to represent any activity that one does for pleasure, amusement, or relaxation in one’s leisure time. It became associated with pastimes or activities that people pursued for their enjoyment and personal fulfillment.

Today, the term “hobby” still carries the connotation of being an enjoyable and leisurely pursuit rather than a professional or work-related activity. Hobbies can range from arts and crafts, sports, gardening, collecting, reading, and various other activities that individuals engage in for their personal satisfaction.
