Good grief, June is almost over already! Where does the time go? Today’s is the second-to-last Wordle of the month. By Wordle #742, July will have landed.
July, of course, is named after Julius Caesar, with the following month named after Augustus Caesar. Both months have 31 days in honor of their namesakes.
Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and instead of a traditional riddle, I gave readers a bit of a math puzzle to work out. Let’s take a look at that before we move on to today’s Wordle.
Today’s Riddle: If a hen and a half lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs will half a dozen hens lay in half a dozen days?
The Answer: Two dozen!
Anyone get it right?
Okay, Wordle time!

Wordle Bot Analysis
I was feeling very pleased with myself today (at first) getting this one in three. I think it’s a tough word simply because, depending on how you guess, you can easily see how there could be tons of variants. Diner isn’t so different from finer, liner and countless other words.
In any case, when I guessed tribe and got three yellow boxes, I figured I was already doing pretty good. What I needed was to rearrange some letters and hopefully get some other letters in the process, or at least rule out likely consonants.
Rinds was super lucky, nabbing me the ‘N’ and the ‘D’ and moving two letters into green. I now had all five letters and the solution was quickly apparent. Huzzah!
Today’s Score:
Like I said, I was very pleased with my guessing game at first. Then I saw what Wordle Bot did, the dirty knave: He guessed in just two! Slate / diner. WHAT??? Slate has just one of the letters that goes into the word diner. My best guess is that over 100 words remained after that guess. At least. Yet somehow Wordle Bot gets diner on guess #2. I’m calling shenanigans!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “diner” originates from the French term “dîner,” which means “to dine” or “dinner.” The term “dîner” entered English usage around the 18th century, primarily referring to the main meal of the day. However, the modern sense of “diner” as a type of restaurant has a distinct origin.
The American usage of the word “diner” emerged in the late 19th century, referring to small, portable food carts or wagons that sold quick meals. These early diners often served simple, affordable fare and were popular among laborers and travelers. The term “diner” was later extended to permanent structures that resembled the original mobile diners.
In the early 20th century, companies such as the Jerry O’Mahony Diner Company and the Worcester Lunch Car Company began manufacturing pre-fabricated diners that could be transported and assembled on-site. These diners featured distinctive architectural designs, typically with stainless steel exteriors and long counters with stools.
Over time, the term “diner” became associated with these prefabricated restaurants, which offered a wide range of dishes and operated in a casual and inviting atmosphere. Today, the word “diner” generally refers to a type of restaurant, often characterized by its retro aesthetic, comfort food, and 24-hour service.
