Well, gentle Wordlers, we have come to the end of an era: The 600 stretch of Wordles is at an end. This is the 699th Wordle and tomorrow, the 700’s kick off in earnest.
This last stretch of Wordles began way back on February 8th, deep in the frigid wasteland of winter. Wordle #600 both feels like forever ago and like I’ve time-traveled here in an instant.
Maybe time is just a flat circle, after all.
Wordle #800 won’t land until August 26th, 2023. We have one more week of school around here and then the kids will be free. By the time #800 lands, they’ll be back in school (my kids will be in 8th and 11th grade respectively). I imagine myself at the keyboard, typing out Wordle #800 and it’s like I’m already in that moment, looking back, summer already passed.
And sometimes I try to imagine—or perhaps try not to—being even older. My kids all grown up, moved away, starting their own families. Some little bugger calling me ‘Grandpa’ while I make pancakes on the griddle and wonder where the time went. Wasn’t I young once? What happened?
You spent your days writing Wordle guides, old man. And your nights playing video games! A good life, by Jove! One you were lucky to have, living in this time and this place, blessed beyond measure. It runs out eventually. We must punch the proverbial clock and move on to whatever comes next, even if it’s just . . . nothing at all. Nothing wouldn’t be so bad.
Alright, let’s do this Wordle! It’s 2XP Friday, by the way, so if you’re playing competitive Wordle the stakes are higher than ever!

Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “grief” has its origins in Old French and can be traced back to the Latin word “gravis,” meaning “heavy” or “weighty.” In Old French, the term evolved into “grever” or “gref,” which carried the sense of “burden” or “burden of the mind.” This eventually gave rise to the noun “grief,” referring to a state of deep sorrow, sadness, or emotional distress.
The word “grief” has been used in English since the 13th century and has retained its fundamental meaning throughout history. It is often associated with the intense emotional response to a significant loss, such as the death of a loved one or the experience of a major life change.
Wordle Bot Analysis
After I complete a Wordle I always head over to check in with Wordle Bot to see how I scored, both in terms of each individual guess and whether or not I outsmarted the Bot.
I was thinking about horror movies today partly because I wrote my review of the latest episode of Fear The Walking Dead and it was, as per usual, a very awful stupid episode. I was thinking of movies that deal with horror themes, post-apocalyptic settings and so forth and thought of the wonderful movie A Quiet Place. I suppose place would have been a good opener, but I went with quiet, and what luck! This slashed the remaining possible words down to just 22, though of course I didn’t know that at the time.
Still, I knew there were many possible options remaining so I picked a second word that would eliminate as many as possible (alien, chief etc.). After chaps I still had 9 words left, though I didn’t know this either. Too many to be sure, so I just picked one and voila! I got the Wordle! Grief didn’t make me sad this time around.
Today’s Score: 1 point for guessing in 3 and 1 more point for beating Wordle Bot who took four tries = 2 points but this is 2XP Friday so 2×2 = 4 points. That’s really good! Huzzah for me!
Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!
I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.
