Today’s Wordle #689 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, May 9th

We’re in week two of the Hollywood writers’ strike, and I fear that it will likely go on for a very, very long time given that the big movie studios and streamers have been stockpiling scripts in anticipation of the WGA action.

Whether or not you agree with the guild or think unions are good or bad, I think we can all agree that A) we want good scripts because they make for better TV shows and movies and B) we want people to be paid a fair wage for their labor. My hope is that all of this is resolved in a manner that benefits everyone.

In any case, I’ll have more to say about all of that here on this blog (which you should follow!) and on my YouTube channel (which you should subscribe to!) but for now, we have a Wordle to solve. Let’s do it!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Bean.

The Clue: This word has double double letters.

The Answer:

Well my luck had to run out sooner or later. After a couple days of lucky guesses (though only getting the answers in three each time!) I was defeated today, though not entirely, by Wordle #689.

Since I’ve been thinking about the WGA strike, I opened my guessing with guild today (as in the Writer’s Guild Of America) which ended up being a truly awful opener, sadly. 847 words remained, I discovered later. As painful as that is, my second guess, shame, may have been even worse. I was left with just one yellow box and Wordle Bot informed me later that I still had 71 possible solutions left.

Again, with my mind on Hollywood and the strike, I chose actor next, thankfully slashing that number down to just 3. Bacon, canon and cocoa were all I could come up with so I went with my favorite of the three and guessed bacon.

Still, no dice. Luck abandoned me today in a big way, though at least I knew what the answer had to be: cocoa for the win!

My score today: Well this one was a bummer. Wordle Bot somehow got it in just three, so I get -1 for losing to the bot and -2 for guessing in 5. That’s a grand total of -3. Ouch! That hurts . . . . (See rules below).

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “cocoa” comes from the Spanish word “cacao,” which was originally derived from the Nahuatl word “cacahuatl.” The Nahuatl language was spoken by the Aztecs, who cultivated cocoa beans and used them to make a bitter drink called “xocolātl,” which was often mixed with spices and sometimes sweetened with honey. The word “xocolātl” is also believed to be the origin of the English word “chocolate.” The term “cocoa” specifically refers to the powdered form of the cocoa bean, which is used in baking and for making hot cocoa drinks.
