Today’s Wordle #684 Hints, Clues And Answer For Thursday, May 4th

Wordle, Wordle, Wordle. Another one down, another to come. The puzzle quest continues, and we have another fun one to solve this fine Thor’s day.

I suppose I have Thor on my mind lately as I’ve finally started the fifth season of The Last Kingdom on Netflix. For whatever reason, when that came out I just didn’t get around to watching. Maybe I had Viking burnout or something. In any case, I’m two episodes deep and it’s good to be back in merry old England, with the Saxons and Danes and their bloody contest not just for land, but for the hearts and minds of the people. Christians versus heathens; heathens versus heathens; Christians versus Christians. It’s a good show, and there’s the new Seven Kings Must Die film on Netflix that caps off the whole saga, so I need to catch up.

I suppose my mind ought to be on Star Wars given that today is May the 4th—aka May the 4th Be With You. Lots of Star Wars stuff happens today, close on the heels of last month’s big Star Wars Celebration. There’s even a new Star Wars show—for little kids—called Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures which debuts on Disney+ today.

In any case, yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, which meant a new riddle. Here’s the riddle and answer:

Riddle: You’ll find me in Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. But never Neptune, Pluto or Venus. What am I?

Answer: The letter ‘R’.

Some of you sent me the correct answer on Twitter or Facebook which I appreciate! I don’t always have time to reply to everyone, but it’s fun to see that people are enjoying these each week.

Okay, let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Tropical, aquatic, itty-bitty.

The Clue: This word has a repeat letter in it.

The Answer:

I was a little upset that this took me five guesses until I went over to the Wordle Bot page and discovered that ye olde Bot also took five. I guess it’s one of those five-letter-days! (Though this may also be an opportunity for readers to beat the snot out of me in competitive Wordle!)

My first guess was fine. Blues left me with 128 remaining words and one vowel in yellow. I figured I’d try to eliminate some other popular letters and vowels and guessed train, which left me with 24 remaining words. Not great, not terrible. Onward!

I wanted something that used a ‘Y’ given I was pretty sure at this point that the ‘U’ would be in the second slot. Dumpy fit the bill and cut the remaining solutions down to just two. And here is where my love of dogs got the better of me. I wanted the answer to be puppy so I guessed it, and when that ‘P’ turned over grey, I knew what the answer would be. Alas, guppy took me five.

My score today: This could have been worse. Guessing in five means -1 points, but at least I tied Wordle Bot so I didn’t lose a second point. Grand total: -1. Is that huzzah-worthy? Why not? Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via Google Bard)

The word “guppy” is named after the British-born Trinidad clergyman Robert John Lechmere Guppy (1836–1916), who collected the first specimens of the fish in Trinidad in 1866. The fish was originally named Girardinus guppii by the German ichthyologist Albert Günther, but the name was later changed to Poecilia reticulata. The common name “guppy” is still used today.

The word “guppy” first appeared in print in 1918, around the time that the fish became popular as an aquarium fish.
