Today’s Wordle #683 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, May 3rd

It’s Wordle Wednesday! Every Wednesday—except when I forget, like last week—I spice up this Wordle column with a riddle.

There is no real rhyme or reason for this, other than I like to keep things fresh and interesting as much as possible with a daily Wordle column. Sometimes this means ruminations on the state of society and politics; sometimes I just wax poetic about the damn weather. And sometimes, it means riddles.

Alright, let’s get right to it . . .

Riddle Me This: You’ll find me in Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. But never Neptune, Pluto or Venus. What am I?

I’ll post the answer tomorrow, but feel free to send me your solution on Twitter or Facebook.

Let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Enemies of the Alliance.

The Clue: This word ends with a vowel.

The Answer:

I was thinking about yoga, which I’ve been avoiding but need to stop avoiding, which explains my first guess, yogis. Yoga is one of those things that always makes me feel terrific, but that I still put off because it sounds hard. And hot. Hot yoga in warm weather is less enticing. Still, someone as inflexible as your humble narrator needs it.

In any case, that left me with 201 remaining solutions, which is quite a few. Thankfully, tamer dragged that number down to a respectable 3. From here I just had to guess. I came up with three options: force, borne and horde. I admit, I chose based on which word I thought was the coolest. They’re all kind of great words, but horde is the most beastly. And I’m an old-school Warcraft player. “For the Horde!” (Hence my hint. Sorry).

It was right, and I got it in three. Huzzah!

My score today: Wordle Bot actually took four guesses today, which means that I get 1 point for guessing in three and 1 point for beating the Bot. Grand total: 2 points! Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “horde” has its origins in the Turkic languages of Central Asia. The Old Turkic word “ordu” originally referred to a royal camp or palace, and later came to refer to the entire retinue of the ruler, including soldiers, servants, and followers.

The word was adopted into the Slavic languages, where it became “orda” or “horda,” meaning a nomadic tribe or army. From there, it was borrowed into English in the early 16th century, where it retains its original sense of a large group of people or a wandering tribe.
