Okay boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, Wordlers and wannabees. All y’all, as they say. It’s May! It’s gorgeous outside. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the first blossoms are blossoming. It’s honestly getting a little too warm about midday, but I’m a Viking so I’m built for cold, much as I love summer. I overheat.
This is why I describe monsoons as my favorite season, though I do love how nicely things cool off at night this time of year. The day may get hot, but come sundown it’s cool and perfect.
Here’s a poem for May, that can also serve as something of a hint for today’s word. (Notice the tone of the poem is much, much different from the tone of my post).
May
by Jonathan Galassi
The backyard apple tree gets sad so soon,
takes on a used-up, feather-duster look
within a week.
The ivy’s spring reconnaissance campaign
sends red feelers out and up and down
to find the sun.
Ivy from last summer clogs the pool,
brewing a loamy, wormy, tea-leaf mulch
soft to the touch
and rank with interface of rut and rot.
The month after the month they say is cruel
is and is not.
Okay, onto the Wordle!
How To Solve Today’s Wordle
The Hint: Dour.
The Clue: This word has more consonants than vowels.
The Answer:

I don’t know where trine came from except that many years ago I very much enjoyed the Trine video games which are lovely and magical. Alas, my guess was neither of those things, leaving me with a whopping 381 remaining solutions.
From here I shifted course to Call Of Duty, where I often play Warzone with my “quad” which is like a squad. In fact, I could have used squad here but used quads instead precisely because I’m so used to playing Warzone. Either way, I would have gotten one green box and one yellow box.
With 13 remaining solutions (though I didn’t know that at the time) I made a guess using the first word that came to mind: husky, the dog breed with the prettiest eyes. Now I was in business, with just one possible solution remaining: sulky.
My score today: Well nothing special here. Zero points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot, who guessed in 3 for a grand total of -1. I’ll try not to sulk over it.
Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)
The word “sulky” has its origins in the mid-18th century and is believed to have derived from the obsolete verb “sulk,” which meant to keep aloof or to withdraw from society.
The word “sulk” can be traced back to the Old English word “sulcian,” meaning “to become sulky.” The Old English word is related to the Middle High German word “sulken,” meaning “to lie in wait,” and the Old Norse word “sulkr,” meaning “grumpy.”
Over time, the meaning of “sulky” evolved to describe a person who is sullen, bad-tempered, or uncommunicative, especially in a moody or silent way. The word also came to be used to describe a vehicle, typically a two-wheeled carriage, that is designed for one person and pulled by a horse. The vehicle is called a sulky because it has a single seat, and the driver sits in a sulky, or sullen, manner.
