Today’s Wordle #679 Hints, Clues And Answers For Saturday, April 29th

The last weekend of April is upon us, dearest Wordlers. Monday will be May Day.

I’ve written another weekend streaming guide—everything from a Peter Pan remake to a new dramatization of the Watergate scandal—for anyone looking for some good TV and movies, so definitely check that out. I’ll be posting this growing, morphing list of the best stuff to watch every weekend, so definitely keep an eye out for that.

It’s crazy to think that April is already over. Even my 12-year-old was commenting on how fast this month seemed to fly by. I told him that we’d better find a way to slow down time over the summer break. He agreed. Alas, time waits for no man (and all that jazz).

Five things I’m looking forward to in May:

  • My crab apple trees blossoming into clouds of pink.
  • The Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3
  • The vampire-slaying co-op game Redfall.
  • The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom
  • Warmer weather.

Anything fun upcoming in your busy lives? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook!

And now let’s crack this Wordle, shall we?

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Wood.

The Clue: This word has more consonants than vowels in it.

The Answer:

Not a whole lot to say about today’s guessing game. My opener, plane, didn’t do that well, though 160 remaining solutions could certainly be worse. And sometimes, depending on the word and your next guess, even starting with 40 or 50 could still take more guesses.

Case in point, stear—which, frankly, I didn’t think Wordle would even accept as a word—slashed that number down to just 3. At the time I could only think of two: cedar and rebar and while I’m not certain, I feel like we’ve already had rebar as a word in the past so I went with cedar—for the win!

My score today: Today, Wordle Bot and I tied. That means I got one point for guessing in three and zero for tying the Bot, for a grand total of 1 point. Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “cedar” comes from the Old English word “cēdhr,” which itself derived from the Latin word “cedrus,” which referred to the cedar tree. The Latin word, in turn, was borrowed from the Greek word “kedros.” The Greek word was possibly borrowed from an earlier language, possibly the Akkadian language of ancient Mesopotamia, which had a word “kudurru” that referred to a type of wood used in building.

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.
