Today’s Wordle #672 Hints, Clues And Answers For Saturday, April 22nd

I think it’s possible that paying such close attention to time is not beneficial for my mental wellbeing. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy this Wordle column, but I wonder if it makes me think about the passage of time too keenly. Typing out the date, watching each dissolve into the next, thinking about how fast this month has gone by, how soon we’ll be hanging up Christmas lights again, and it’s not even summer yet.

I recently watched Beef on Netflix (which is wonderful by the way) and one of the characters says at one point that time goes by faster for adults than it does for children because we’ve been around longer. Kids have no perspective, because they’ve only been around for such a short period of time, but once you have decades of experience in the world, it just seems to go by faster. We have all these memories, and so many of them stretch back into the blurry depths of life. Kids, on the other hand, live almost entirely in the present, especially when they’re very young.

It also has to do with newness. We remember new things the most, which is why it’s so important to do things like travel, take up hobbies, shake things up a bit.

“Most [adults] feel that time elapsed slowly in their earlier days, but then speeds up later in life,” neurologist and neuroscientist Santosh Kesari told NBC.

“For a 10-year-old, one year is 10 percent of their lives,” Kesari says. “For a 60-year-old, one year is less than two percent of their lives.”

Says Kesari: “We gauge time by memorable events and fewer new things occur as we age to remember, making it seem like childhood lasted longer.”

Alright, now that we’ve had our food for thought, let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: When you’ve spent your last dime.

The Clue: This word ends with a vowel.

The Answer:

Well, today’s Wordle went better than expected. I had to post the comparison shot with Wordle Bot on this one, because I was honestly pretty shocked that I beat him so badly today!

My first guess, trial, didn’t do much, but it really wasn’t bad, leaving me with just 80 remaining possible solutions. I didn’t get any vowels and since I knew where the ‘R’ went, I picked all new letters for my second word, spoke.

That did the trick! I wasn’t expecting the three green boxes, but now I had a total of four and honestly I didn’t even consider any other letters. I popped broke in immediately. You call that going for broke and it paid off! Huzzah!

My score today: Dang, I wish this had been yesterday with the double XP boost. I beat Wordle Bot so that’s 1 point and I got it in 3 which is another point for a grand total of 2 points. Not too shabby!

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “broke” comes from the past participle form of the verb “break,” which originally meant “to smash” or “to shatter.” Over time, the meaning of “break” expanded to include the sense of “to become financially ruined or bankrupt.” The use of “broke” to describe a person without money or resources dates back to the 1800s in American English, and it likely originated as a metaphorical extension of the original sense of “break” to mean “to be shattered or ruined.” Today, “broke” is a common colloquialism used to describe someone who is financially destitute or in dire financial straits.
