Well we have about a month before we hit Wordle #700. That’s the next big milestone, I suppose. The next one after that is Wordle #730 (sixty days from now) which marks the two year anniversary of the game.
Officially, Josh Wardle didn’t release Wordle to the teaming masses until months after Wordle #1, and it really didn’t get popular until December 2021 / January 2022 with a peak in February / March.
It’s remarkable it’s still going so strong all these months later, but it is fun! I also recently wrote about two other fun puzzle games—Numbword and Digits—that you can check out, but Wordle remains everyone’s favorite.
Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday. I do a riddle every Wednesday to spice things up around here (the word puzzle game equivalent of sexy lingerie). Today I give you the answer.
Yesterday’s riddle was:
Two men are in the middle of a vast desert. One is alive, the other is dead. Both are wearing backpacks, but the living man’s pack is open, while the dead man’s is closed. What is in the dead man’s backpack?
The Answer: A parachute.
Alright, let’s do this Wordle!
How To Solve Today’s Wordle
The Hint: I often feel like I have a lot on my this.
The Clue: This word rhymes with a popular Wordle opener.
The Answer:

You know what, to hell with this word. Anyone who guessed slate got this one easy. Including Wordle Bot, my greatest enemy and one of the most nefarious, evil, sadistic and terrifying supervillains the world has ever known.
My opening guess has a story, of course. I was just reading about the ongoing controversy around actor Jonathan Majors (a bummer of a story all around) and thought major might be a good opening word. Then I thought, ‘J’ isn’t so great but ‘Y’ might be, so I went with mayor instead. This made me think of musician Mayer Hawthorne, who I really like, so here’s a YouTube video of his hilarious and catchy song, The Walk:
From here, with a yellow ‘A’ I thought, ah what the heck I’ll try slate and when four boxes turned over green I knew two things all at once: The answer was almost certainly plate and Wordle Bot definitely guessed it in just two guesses.
I was, alas, right on both counts. But at least I got it in three! Huzzah!
My score today: I get +1 point for guessing in 3 but -1 for losing to Wordle Bot, who of course guessed slate first and then—shockingly—moved right on to plate. Only elate was left for either of us and who guesses that when plate is right there? That’s a cancelling of points for me, and a grand total of ZERO.
Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)
The word “plate” comes from the Old French word “plate” or “plat,” which means “flat” or “level.” This Old French word is derived from the Latin word “platus,” meaning “flat” or “broad.” The use of the word “plate” to refer to a flat or shallow dish dates back to the 14th century, while the sense of a flat sheet of metal or other material is attested from the early 16th century. Over time, the word “plate” has taken on a variety of meanings, including a flat piece of metal, a printing plate, a photographic plate, and a decorative dish used for serving food.
