Today’s Wordle #668 Hints, Clues And Answers For Tuesday, April 18th

Tuesday. I’ve talked about this day of the week before. It’s one of those days that isn’t that remarkable. Sort of like Thursday. It isn’t the beginning, the middle or the end. It isn’t a weekend. Holidays often fall just before it.

But you vote on Tuesdays, at least here in the USA. And most video games release on Tuesdays. Some great songs are about Tuesday, like ‘Ruby Tuesday’ by The Rolling Stones and ‘Tuesday’s Gone’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd, or ‘Tuesday’s Dead’ by Cat Stevens.

On this particular Tuesday in history:

  • In 1775, Paul Revere made his famous ride warning American colonists that the Red Coats were coming.
  • In 1906, a massive earthquake very nearly destroyed San Francisco, CA. This was a precursor of things to come.
  • In 1943, Jewish prisoners made a desperate attempt to overthrow their Nazi oppressors in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
  • In 1955, famed physicist Albert Einstein dies at the age of 76 in Princeton, NJ.
  • In 1980, Zimbabwe finally gains its independence from Britain and is renamed the Republic of Zimbabwe.
  • In 1983, a suicide bomber detonates at the US embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, leaving 63 people—including 17 Americans—dead.
  • In 2013, three people are killed and 260 more injured in the Boston Marathon bombings.
  • In 2019, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, France catches fire. The famous structure is damaged badly by the flames.

Okay, Wordle time . . . .

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: The smaller Clegane.

The Clue: This word has fewer vowels than it does consonants.

This might not seem like such a tricky word—not so difficult as snafu, in any case—but it actually is deceptively hard, simply because so many words end with ound. There’s sound, wound, bound, pound, round and so forth. Too many to guess through, which is why I had to change course after bound, ruling out more possible letters than I had guesses remaining.

The trick is to come up with a word that eliminates as many remaining letters as possible. When I guessed bound I started coming up with all the words I could think of and came up with 4—one too many to leave it to luck. Hound, Found, Mound and Wound were left so I guessed wombs. Wordle Bot game up with a better one later: whims, which would have cleared one more letter. Oh well! I tossed a coin (figuratively) and guessed hound for the win. Huzzah!

My score today: -1 for guessing in 5 and 0 for tying Wordle Bot for a total of -1. It could have been worse . . . .

As you can see, we both had a difficult time getting to the answer:

Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)

The word “hound” comes from the Old English word “hund”, which is related to the German word “Hund” and the Dutch word “hond”. The origin of the word can be traced back even further to the Proto-Germanic word “hundaz”, which is also the root of the word “canine”. The word “hound” was originally used to refer to any type of dog, but over time it came to be associated specifically with hunting dogs, particularly those used for tracking game.
