So yesterday was Easter and I just sort of spaced mentioning it in my post, which I guess was a bit of a snafu on my part. I guess it slipped my mind while writing despite having a number of Easter-related plans. I think it’s the insomnia. Lack of sleep does horrible things to a person. I’m working on it!
In any case, I hope you had a lovely Easter. Mine was a little bittersweet. My kids are getting too old for Easter Egg hunts. Thinking back on all the fun memories of holidays of yore brings a smile to my face but also makes me feel sad and old. Regrets bubble up to the surface. I wish I could go back in time and spend more time with them when they were little and wide-eyed and still so in awe of the world and filled with joy and ignorance, before the indignities of life began to creep in, the school bullies and the insecurities of adolescence, and social media and all the rot.
How quickly we begin to die.
I suppose that’s a grim meditation, but then Easter is a celebration of death and rebirth. Whether or not you’re Christian, it’s the first real holiday of spring. Winter—death—shuffles off and spring—rebirth—blossoms in all its sugary pastels. Life is little more than the path we take to dying, and so we’re naturally drawn to the promise of new life—eternal life, reincarnation, whatever shape that paradise takes—like moths to flame or flies to honey.
Those last four words would all make lovely starting guesses for Wordle, by the way. Moths, flame, flies, honey. Add them to your list!
And let’s do this Wordle!
How To Solve Today’s Wordle
The Hint: It’s not over.
The Clue: This word begins with a vowel.
The Answer:
.
.
.
Quite the despairing words now that I look back on my guesses. I must be in a funk. Crime came out of nowhere. Perhaps I should re-read Crime And Punishment. It came out of nowhere and came to nothing, leaving me with a whopping 226 words remaining. Crime, as they are quick to remind us, simply does not pay.
Agony is an even more tortured word, though for all its anguish a rather beautiful one. It sliced that 226 down to just 9, but it wasn’t until my third guess that I got good and truly lucky. I knew I had a lot of words to choose from, and my gut told me this would be another double E word. But my brain said “You haven’t tried all the vowels yet! You must try ‘U’!” I could think of two words with a ‘U’—under and rerun—and I didn’t like the double ‘R’ so I chose under. Much to my surprise, it was right! Huzzah!
That’s 1 point for guessing in three and zero for tying El Wordle Botto. 1 point is good in my book!
Today’s Wordle Etymology (Via ChatGPT)
The word “under” comes from the Old English word “under”, which has the same meaning. Its origins can be traced back to the Proto-Germanic word “undar”, which means “under” or “beneath”. This word is also related to the Old High German word “untar” and the Gothic word “undar”. The Proto-Germanic word itself is believed to have derived from the Proto-Indo-European root “*ndher-“, which means “below” or “under”. The same root is also the origin of the Latin prefix “infra-“, which has a similar meaning.
