This is the end, beautiful friends. The last day of February. March is dusting off its winter coat as we speak, ready to one-step out of hibernation and parade into the year of our lord, 2023. “Beware the Ides of March,” the soothsayer told Julius Caesar (according to Plutarch, as memorialized by William Shakespeare) and sure enough, the emperor of Rome was assassinated on the 15th of the month, by the very men he considered allies and friends.
Hopefully we all have less dire months ahead of us, though for my part it looks like the 1st of March—tomorrow!—will be more snow, to the tune of 18 – 24” on top of the mounds and piles we already have. I’m so used to be being buried in snow at this point, all I can do is throw my hands up in mock despair. Shoveling is a good workout if you can’t make it to the gym!
But now it’s time to exercise our minds. Let’s do this Wordle! The last Wordle of February!
How To Solve Today’s Wordle
The Hint: Music you might listen to while eating schnitzel and drinking beer, perhaps at Oktoberfest.
The Clue: This word ends with a vowel.
The Answer (Spoilers):
.
.
.
Holy Weihenstephaner! This was a pleasant surprise today! It’s been ages since I’ve gotten a word in two guesses (it took me a whopping five yesterday). I was trying to guess something very similar to Wordle Bot’s favorite opening word—slate—and finally decided on slake, which was the closest thing I could come up with that wasn’t slate.
At the time, I didn’t realize just how good this word was. I was pleased (and surprised) to get the ‘K’ in green, and after fiddling with other vowels, all I could think of was polka. Nothing else came to mind, though later Wordle Bot informed me I had four choices: polka, lanky, balky and talky. I probably would have come up with lanky eventually, but not the other two (at least not quickly!)
In any case, polka was shockingly the right answer which means I get +2 for guessing in just two guesses and +1 for beating Wordle Bot (who got his answer in three guesses) for a grand total of 3 points! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!
Polka Etymology
I asked ChatGPT to give me a lesson in the origin story of polka. Here’s what the AI told me:
The term “polka” originally referred to a Czech dance and music style that developed in the mid-19th century. The name “polka” is derived from the Czech word “půlka,” which means “half-step” or “half-beat.” The dance was so named because it was characterized by a rapid two-step, with a hop on the first beat and a step on the second, creating a rhythm that emphasized the half-beat.
The polka quickly became popular throughout Europe and America, and the term “polka” became associated with any music or dance that followed a similar rhythm. The dance and music were particularly popular in the mid-19th century, but it continues to be performed and enjoyed today, especially in traditional and folk music settings.
Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!
I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course).
Here are the rules:
- 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
- 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
- 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
- 1 point for beating Erik
- 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
- -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
- -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
- -3 points for losing.
- -1 point for losing to Erik
Your best game would be a hole in 1 (3 points) and beating me (1 point) for 4 total. Your worst would be failing to guess the correct answer (-3 points) and losing to me (-1) point for a -4 total. These are outlier scores, however. Usually my worst is a -2 and my best a +2.
Have a fantastic Tuesday, my dearest Wordlers!
