Today’s ‘Wordle’ #320 Answer: Thursday, May 5th

Well it’s Thursday again. Yesterday was May the Fourth, aka Star Wars Day, which was fun because we got both a new trailer and a new poster for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show, which I’m definitely geeking out about. It’s probably the most excited I’ve been for anything Star Wars since The Mandalorian.

Wordle may not be quite as hot as it was a month or two ago, but the little word puzzle game continues to be a fun diversion for many, and today’s word should prove extra challenging. I’m honestly surprised that The New York Times actually allowed it to remain in the list when it purged a bunch of answers from the original game.

Still, I love the weird, obscure and extra-challenging words. They’re great warmups for harder games like Dordle. Let’s take a look at today’s Wordle word of the day, shall we?

Today’s Wordle #320 Answer & Hint

As per usual, this is the part where I warn you of spoilers. Spoilers follow. The following is spoilery territory and I wouldn’t want you to get spoiled if you didn’t want that. But first, a hint!

The first name of someone whose last name is the same as the last name of someone whose first name is the abbreviation of a kind of juice. (Trust me, writing that in a way that makes sense is just as hard as deciphering it. Good luck).

And the answer is . . .

I hope that makes my hint more clear.

Homer is the first name of Homer Simpson of The Simpson’s fame, who shares a last name with O.J. Simpson, a dude who I’m pretty sure is only famous because his first name is an abbreviation for orange juice.

Yeah.

Anyways, this was a tough word. A really, really tough word. For one thing, I didn’t know it was a word that you could use in Wordle (or Scrabble) as a possible solution. I thought it was a proper noun or slang, neither of which is typically accepted. A ‘homer’ is a home run in baseball or, “an ancient Hebrew unit of capacity equal to about 101/2 or later 111/2 bushels or 100 U.S. gallons.”

You learn something new every day! But neither the slang ‘homer’ nor the ancient Hebrew ‘homer’ nor the ancient Greek author Homer seemed like very good possibilities for today’s Wordle and so I went with hover, for my penultimate guess, all but certain I had it right. But I was wrong.

And since I was now on guess #6 I was, to put it mildly, pretty damn nervous. My guesses up to this point were okay but not great. Cloud did very little for me (and Wordle Bot was quick to point out that crane is better. Yep, we know, Wordle Bot!)

Still, both that guess and orbit earned me a ‘solid choice’ pat on the back from ye olde bot. Hoary, while narrowing the possible solutions down to four (!) earned me more finger wagging, with Wordle Bot informing me that manse is usually a better pick in this scenario.

At this point, I think I found a bug in the Wordle Bot code, because while it said my guess of horse was pretty good, it pointed out that homer would have eliminated more words:

“Guessing HOMER, for example, would have guaranteed eliminating every possible solution but one.”

Yes, I mean, obviously? Homer was the answer! It would eliminate every possible solution because it’s the answer. You can’t honestly give me crap for not guessing the answer when there were still two possible answers left!

I guessed hover because, quite frankly, it’s the better choice at this point. Hover is clearly a word that would be accepted in both Wordle and Scrabble. It just happened to be the wrong answer. As Wordle Bot noted, this was unlucky but a smart guess. Fortunately, I took the leap of faith (having no other words to choose from beyond hojer, hoker and so forth) and went with homer for the win.
