Today’s Wordle #1586 Hints And Answer For Wednesday, October 22

Looking for help with today’s Wordle? Look no further, dearest Wordlers, I have an extra hint and clue for you as well as the answer down below. It’s also Wordle Wednesday, which mean I have an extra challenge for you before we get to the solution.

Every Wednesday I dole out a new riddle, brain-teaser or logic puzzle for you to solve. Last week’s was super hard, so today we’re going a bit easier. I realize not everyone wants to solve in-depth logic puzzles (who even has time?) so here’s a riddle instead:

Let me know if you can solve this one by shooting me a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook and I’ll post the solution in tomorrow’s Thursday Wordle Guide. For now, let’s solve this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Hints And Answer

  • Wordle Bot’s Starting Word: SLATE
  • My Starting Word Today: SPARE (98 words remaining)
  • The Hint: Used in action scenes in movies, often with doubles.
  • The Clue: This Wordle has a double letter.

Wordle Bot Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

SPARE was a fine opening guess today, though not great by any means. LIROT slashed the 98 remaining words down to just 2 (and yes, I was just trying to come up with a word that used as many common letters as possible—LIROT is the plural form of lira, a currency used in a number of countries similar to “pound” or “dollar” or “rupee”). The two remaining words were SHUNT and STUNT but I only came up with STUNT. Lucky for me, that was the Wordle!

Competitive Wordle Score

The Wordle Bot and I each get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying. We’ve been tying almost every day lately, which is good for me but not for the Bot, who remains far, far behind me in October:

Erik: 19 points

Wordle Bot: 3 point

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

Stunt comes from Middle English stunten (“to make dull or stupid”), related to Old Norse stuttr (“short”). It originally meant “to hinder growth,” later evolving in the 19th century to mean “a daring feat” — something that “stops” people in amazement.
