How to solve today’s Wordle.

Today’s Wordle is brought to you by the letter ‘O’ and the number ‘10’. O as in October and the color orange like the leaves soon will be, and the jack-o‘-lanterns. Ten, as in it’s the tenth month of the year. I think it feels like the year is going by so fast because so much is changing so quickly. Huge changes in the federal government. Global upheaval. Big cultural shifts. The sudden rise of AI as large language models infiltrate every aspect of our lives. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer it when things change a bit more gradually. Oh well.
Today is not just the first day of October, it’s also Wordle Wednesday, and I have a seasonally-themed riddle for you to solve before we tackle the Wordle. Here it is:
What do autumn leaves and lousy bowlers have in common?
I’ll post the answer tomorrow. In the meantime, let’s solve this Wordle!

How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.
After a thorough trouncing, a veritable spanking, an utter defeat at the hands of the nefarious Wordle Bot in last month’s grueling Competitive Wordle showdown, I’m just happy to start October off with a decisive blow against my sword nemesis. The funny thing is, I almost picked SPOIL as my starting word today (as well as SPARE) before I decided on SPORE. That’s a starting word I’ve used many times in the past, and today it was really good, though obviously not as good as SPOIL would have been!
Competitive Wordle Score
Today’s Wordle

I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating the Bot. The Bot gets 1 point for guessing in three, but loses it immediately since it lost to me. Our starting October tallies are:
Erik: 3 points
Wordle Bot: 0 points
Ouch. This one hurt. At least I can wipe the slate clean tomorrow!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
Spoil comes from Latin spoliare “to strip, plunder,” via Old French espoillier. It first meant “to rob or take as booty,” later “to ruin or damage,” and eventually “to overindulge.”
