Today’s Wordle #1534 Hints And Answer For Sunday, August 31st

August is almost over. Just hours now and then it’ll be September. I often think of the album August and Everything After by the Counting Crows when we come to this time of year. And then, in December, I think of that band’s song A Long December. That’s a very wistful, sad sort of song but I like the refrain: It’s been a long December and I’ve reason to believe, maybe this year will be better than the last. This year, so far, despite ongoing lower back pain issues, has been better than the last. The goal, I think, though we often have very little say over so much of life, is to make every year a little better. Usually that means taking care of ourselves and being kind to those around us. Most everything else is outside our control.

How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

I felt good about today’s guessing game. BLADE sliced through most of the 2300+ possible solutions and left me with just 35. METAL (as in the stuff you make a blade with!) sliced all but two from that number. I had FETAL and PETAL to choose from, and I vaguely remember FETAL being a Wordle in the past (though I could be mistaken). So I went with PETAL and voila presto! that was the Wordle! Huzzah! (Also, a metal petal blade just sounds cool).

Competitive Wordle Score

Alas! Alas and misfortune! While I did good guessing in three and get 1 point for that, the dastardly Wordle Bot guessed today’s in just two. That means I lose my point for losing to the Bot and the Bot—that villain! that knave!—gets 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating me. Our final August tally widens considerably to:

Erik: 17 points

Wordle Bot: 21 points

Once again, the Wordle Bot emerges victorious. Oh well! September is another month. I will fight on, dearest Wordlers, and so must you . . . .

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word petal comes from the Greek petalon, meaning “leaf” or “thin plate,” derived from petannynai (“to spread out”). It passed into Latin as petalum and then into modern European languages, entering English in the early 18th century to describe the colored parts of a flower that spread out like little leaves.
