Well, oh my Wordlers, oh thou puzzle solvers of goodness and truth: August is just about over. The end of this month kind of snuck up on me. Sunday is the final day of August and then September spreads its wings. We’ll get just a few more weeks of summer before Autumn breezes in. Then it’s all pumpkin spice and flannel shirts and sweaters and slowly changing leaves. From mid-September to mid-to-late October is one of my favorite times of the year. A bit cooler but not cold yet. Leaves changing but not fallen yet. No major holidays yet. By Halloween, things have typically grown considerably chillier and then comes the parade of holidays to navigate. Don’t get me wrong, I love Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas but it can be a lot.
Lots of time still, even if 2025 is going by faster than any year in recorded history! Let’s solve the final Saturday Wordle of August, shall we?

How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.
CRATE is my go-to opening guess when I want to use Wordle’s favorite guesses but not exactly. It’s a hybrid of SLATE and CRANE, basically, and tends to be quite effective. It sure was today. I had just 9 words remaining, but obviously all of those ended with ATE. With so many possibilities, I figured I should try to cut down my choices. SLURP did the trick, leaving me with just one possible solution: ELATE for the win! I feel elated! Huzzah!
Competitive Wordle Score

The Bot and I each get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying. I remain just behind the evil monstrous Bot, and I only have one more day to turn things around:
Erik: 17 points
Wordle Bot: 18 points
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word elate comes from the Latin verb ēlātus, the past participle of efferre meaning “to carry out, lift up, raise.” It passed into Middle English via Latin, where it meant “raised” or “exalted,” and later developed the sense of being uplifted in spirit, i.e., “to make joyful or proud.”
