Tim Tszyu on Saturday gets the biggest chance of his career. It’s not just because he’s fighting perhaps the toughest fighter of his career in former U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha. It’s also because he’s making his American debut and headlining a Showtime card. Until now, Tszyu, the son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu, has only fought in Australia. But all of that will change on Saturday night. Here’s everything you need to know about Tim Tszyu vs. Terrell Gausha, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.
Fighting in America will be a nice moment for Tszyu. He said he’s dreamed of the day, and considering he’s headlining a major show despite not ever fighting for a world title, that’s a real testament to his potential.
But you know what would be even better for Tszyu? Looking dominant against an opponent like Gausha.
“This is going to be an interesting fight,” Tszyu said. “I’m quite interested to see what he’s going to bring. Gausha has the tools to win. He’s got great skills and quick hands and a good variety of punches. He does the simple things very well. I like those types of styles. I’ve sparred guys like that in the U.S., and it’s a fun style to fight against.
“I don’t look particularly big or strong, but when I get in the ring, I give off that dominance that says, ‘This is my ring. This is what I do and you’re coming onto my stage.’ I present that dominance straight away and let everyone know.”
Tszyu, a 27-year-old junior middleweight, has had a nice run so far in his six-year career. He scored his most high-profile victory in 2020 when he knocked out and retired former welterweight titlist and fellow Australian Jeff Horn in front of about 16,000 fans.
Though Gausha has a good chin, Tszyu has pop in his punches.
But what could be challenging for Tszyu is whether he can reach the technically sound Gausha. Though Tszyu is a pressure fighter, Gausha has plenty of boxing skills he says he can use to offset Tszyu’s aggression.
“I expect Tim to try to bring pressure and come forward,” Gausha said. “He’s a one-trick pony. What you see is what you get. He doesn’t do too many things spectacularly, but what he does do well, he does it very well, and that’s bring the pressure. We have something ready for that and we’re going to do our thing no matter what he tries to do.”
Yeah, Tszyu’s trainer Igor Goloubev said, good luck with that.
“Tim is an absolute pressure fighter,” he said. “He’s going to be right on top of Gausha from the start. There’s going to be no rest and nowhere for him to go.”
Here’s more info on the Tim Tszyu vs. Terrell Gausha showdown that U.S. viewers can watch on Showtime beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
Tim Tszyu vs. Terrell Gausha odds
Tszyu is a huge favorite at -1200 (bet $1,200 to win $100) while Gausha is a +700 underdog. To me, that means there’s plenty of value on Gausha. I wouldn’t mind the money line bet on him, or if you want to take on a little bit more risk, you could go with Gausha to win by decision at +1200. Mind you, I don’t think Gausha is actually going to win, but I wouldn’t mind if you put down a little on him to potentially win a lot.
If you were looking for a fun parlay for this weekend’s action of boxing (and this is only for entertainment purposes), I would probably NOT take Gausha. Instead, you could go with Tszyu to win by decision vs. Gausha at +105, Josh Warrington to beat Kiko Martinez at -350 and Miguel Berchelt to stop Jeremiah Nakathila at -250. If you get all those correct, that would pay out $269 on a $100 bet.
Tim Tszyu vs. Terrell Gausha records
Tszyu is a potential international superstar. He’s 20-0 with 15 KOs, and he’s faced some solid opposition lately. After knocking out Horn, he stopped Denis Hogan in the fifth round. Considering Jamie Munguia had barely slipped by Hogan and considering it took Jermall Charlo seven rounds to TKO Hogan, Tszyu’s performance was all the more impressive.
Gausha (22-2, 11 KOs) has a reputation of being a talented but rather unexciting boxer who doesn’t carry much power. He tried to change that line of thinking, though, in his last fight when he pulverized Jamontay Clark.
Whether he can use that momentum against Tszyu is an unknown. But here’s what we do know about Gausha. Every time, he’s fought a B-level or better opponent, he’s faltered. He’s lost to Erickson Lubin and Erislandy Lara. He had a draw with Austin Trout. Beating Tszyu would be the best win of his career.
Tim Tszyu vs. Terrell Gausha prediction
The Clark victory 12 months was nice for Gausha. But Tszyu appears to be on a higher level. Yes, he’s still only a contender, but Tszyu has the look of a potential world champ. I think Gausha is way too wide of an underdog, but I still think Tszyu will win by decision. Say, somewhere in the 116-112 range.
