The sixth and final team owner in the new high-tech, primetime golf league backed by Tiger Woods is… the G.O.A.T. himself.
Woods’ TGR Ventures has partnered with multisport owner David Blitzer on ownership of TGL’s Jupiter Links Golf Club, of which Woods is not surprisingly the first player (of four) on the roster. Woods is among the many PGA Tour professionals who call Jupiter, Florida, home.
“Having the opportunity to not only compete, but also own a team to represent Jupiter is an exciting next chapter for me,” said Woods, who hasn’t played competitively since an April surgery on his right ankle to repair damage from his 2021 car accident.
Woods and Rory McIlroy are the most prominent backers of TGL, which was co-founded by TMRW Sports CEO and former Golf Channel President Mike McCarley in partnership with the PGA Tour. The six-team indoor league combines “Screenplay” and “Greenplay” within a custom-built arena in South Florida, with golfers hitting shots into an IMAX-sized screen in the former (approximately 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator), and hitting pitches, chips and putts at a 40-yard-wide short game complex that has three separate dynamic greens.
“Through its use of technology, TGL is a modern twist of traditional golf and ultimately will make the sport I love more accessible,” said Woods, who has a record-tying 82 PGA Tour victories and 15 major titles.
The 15-hole matches will be played on Monday or Tuesday nights starting in January 2024, with teams competing in two sessions: nine holes of three-player alternate shot called “Triples,” and six holes of head-to-head play called “Singles.” Airing on ESPN and ESPN+, the competition will also feature a 40-second shot clock, four timeouts per team, and referees to oversee the rules of the unique format.
In addition to TGL team ownership and affiliation with TMRW Sports Group, Woods’ TGR Ventures portfolio also extends to TGR Design, TGR Foundation, Full Swing Golf, The Woods Jupiter restaurant, and T-Squared Social.
Blitzer, meanwhile, adds a personal investment in TGL to a growing lineup that includes ownership of major sports teams across the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS. He’s the first person to hold equity in five North American major sports franchises.
Blitzer founded Harriz Blitzer Sports & Entertainment with Josh Harris and is co-chairman and managing partner of a portfolio highlighted by the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, NHL’s New Jersey Devils, the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and Joe Gibbs Racing. Blitzer is also a co-owner of MLB’s Cleveland Guardians and the NFL’s Washington Commanders, and owns stakes in several soccer clubs around the world, including Real Salt Lake of MLS, the Utah Royals of the National Women’s Soccer League, and Crystal Palace Football Club in the English Premier League.
“Tiger Woods is one of the most influential and iconic athletes in the history of sports and I’m thrilled to partner with him to form Jupiter Links GC,” Blitzer said. “Golf is a sport that has a proven ability to bring people together from all over the world and I’m excited by the potential reach and impact we can have as a team and league.”
TGL’s other teams have ownership groups have ties to Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
