Concern about pocket pressure isn’t restricted to Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and his counterpart, the 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo, in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.
Tickets on the secondary market to see whether Los Angeles or San Francisco advances to Super Bowl 56 aren’t for the faint of heart.
To get in SoFi Stadium the cheapest ticket was north of $700 through TickPick late Wednesday night. That easily erases the previous mark for an NFC Championship Game of $647 set by the Philadelphia Eagles-Minnesota Vikings in 2018.
StubHub’s least-expensive ticket to the Rams-Niners showdown was $761.
In Kansas City, where the Chiefs face the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game, a comparable ticket was $615 on StubHub.
Tickets are clearly a hot commodity in L.A and the price isn’t retreating as the matchup between these longtime, NFC West competitors has driven the cost. It’s a rivalry that has been one-side of late with S.F. winning six straight over L.A.
While the Rams continue to build on their original following since returning to L.A. in 2016, the Niners’ boosters have had generations of uninterrupted devotion.
Combine that with L.A. being an hour-or-so flight from the Bay Area and it’s easy to see why S.F.’s fans flock to Southern California seeking tickets.
The Rams were so spooked about S.F fans dominating Sunday’s crowd, as they did in the team’s last visit earlier this month, that they attempted to limit ticket sales to patrons in the L.A. region.
That backfired on the Rams and they changed the policy. It was doomed from the start anyway with a significant portion of customers getting their tickets through secondary avenues.
So it’s a seller’s market, with the Rams glad to be home even if it comes with a shade of red.
“It is nice to not have to hop on an airplane and go travel somewhere,’’ Stafford said. “Then, obviously (we’re) going to have a big contingent of Rams fans there. That should be a lot of fun.”
Those equating enjoyment with the best tickets are active as well.
TickPick reported that its most expensive purchase was a pair of VIP Club Level seats that went for $2,866 per ticket ($5,722 total).
Sunday’s winner will either have the Rams in their second Super Bowl in four years or the Niners aiming for their sixth Super Bowl title at SoFi on Feb. 13.
Regardless of the victor, the Super Bowl 56 ticket prices will demolish what fans are paying for Sunday’s game.
The current cost is around $8,000, for a get-in seat, on various secondary ticket sites.
