The Best New Movies and Shows on Netflix This Week
The Batman (2022)
In the shadowy, corrupt streets of Gotham City, The Batman emerges as a gripping tale of a sadistic killer weaving a trail of cryptic riddles. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Penguin, this film delves into the darkest corners of the metropolis. Batman confronts not only a formidable foe but also the rampant abuse of power and corruption that has long infected Gotham. This iteration stands out as a dark, noir-inspired portrayal of the iconic superhero, blending intense ambition with a chilling narrative. Pattinson’s portrayal is a refreshing and enthralling take on the caped crusader, making The Batman a compelling addition to the Dark Knight’s cinematic legacy.
Virgin River (Season 5 – Part 2)
The quaint Northern California town of Virgin River is once again the backdrop for heartfelt drama in the second part of its fifth season. This time, the series brings two special Christmas episodes. The show, featuring Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel and Martin Henderson as Jack, continues to compress time, with only a few months passing in its universe despite five seasons on screen. Season 5 escalates dramatically, presenting its most challenging and heart-wrenching episodes yet. The townspeople face a devastating wildfire, while Mel and Jack confront personal tragedy with a miscarriage, adding more emotional layers to their ongoing story.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
In this animated adventure, plumbers Mario and Luigi, played by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, find themselves whisked away from Brooklyn to a fantastical realm after stumbling through a mysterious pipe. Separated in this new world, they embark on a quest of epic proportions. Joining Pratt and Day are Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as the formidable Bowser. Directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, the film is a vibrant journey through a beloved universe, echoing the joy and nostalgia reminiscent of Wreck-It Ralph. Despite its straightforward plot, The Super Mario Bros. Movie transcends being a mere advertisement for Nintendo, becoming a heartfelt tribute to the franchise’s legacy and a visual feast for fans and newcomers alike.
Obliterated (Season 1)
From the creative minds behind Cobra Kai comes Obliterated, a high-octane action comedy series starring Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig. This first season introduces viewers to an elite special forces team celebrating a successful mission in Las Vegas. Their revelry with drugs and alcohol comes to an abrupt halt when they learn the bomb they thought they’d defused was a fake. Now, they must navigate their intoxication and a race against time to prevent the city’s destruction. Hayden Schlossberg, the executive producer, director, and co-showrunner, presents a narrative reminiscent of a wild mashup between (as Netflix puts it) 24 and The Hangover, as the team battles external threats and their own impaired judgment.
May December (2023)
Directed by Todd Haynes, May December brings a fascinating narrative to the screen, featuring Natalie Portman as Elizabeth, a popular TV actress who embarks on a journey to portray Gracie, played by Julianne Moore, in a film. The story revolves around Gracie’s scandalous past relationship with Joe, a much younger man played by Charles Melton. As Elizabeth delves into her role in Savannah, Georgia, she uncovers layers of a long-forgotten, controversial love affair that once dominated tabloid headlines. Gracie and Joe’s marriage, born out of a taboo relationship that led to prison time for Gracie, now faces scrutiny under Elizabeth’s gaze.
Sweet Home (Season 2)
Returning after its groundbreaking first season, Sweet Home continues to blend horror and fantasy in an apocalyptic world where desires manifest as monsters. Directed by Lee Eung-bok and based on the webtoon by Kim Kanbi, Season 2 expands the universe beyond the confines of Green Home. The survivors, including Hyun-su portrayed by Song Kang, find themselves in a desolate baseball stadium that now serves as a community amidst the chaos. With new characters and monstrous beings emerging, the season promises a heightened blend of action and suspense. The trailer teases Hyun-su’s pivotal role in this dystopian landscape, leaving viewers questioning whether he can be the savior in a world overrun by terror.
Family Switch (2023)
In Netflix’s latest comedy Family Switch, the Walker family faces an extraordinary situation that turns their world upside down. After a visit to an astrological reader, each family member finds themselves trapped in another’s body, leading to a series of hilarious and heartwarming misadventures. Directed by an ensemble cast including Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and Brady Noon, the film explores the chaos and comedy of a father and son, mother and daughter, and even a baby and a dog swapping bodies. The Walkers must navigate through a day filled with significant events like college interviews and soccer tryouts, all while learning to understand each other’s perspectives deeply.
