I think it’s safe to say that Henry Cavill exceeded everyone’s expectations when he took on the role of Geralt of Rivia for the Netflix fantasy series The Witcher, based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski and games by CD Projekt RED.
Cavill was a fan, however, and embraced the role with gusto. He was excited about the series and the stories it was based upon. And then somewhere along the way, something changed and by Season 4 Cavill will no longer be the titular mutant monster hunter, replaced by Luke Hemsworth.
The new Season 3 trailer has dropped and while it’s a very exciting trailer filled with magic, monsters and mayhem, I can’t help but feel mixed about the whole thing. Season 2 was such a letdown compared to the first season. Cavill’s exit leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It’s hard to feel as invested as I was when this show debuted.
Here’s the trailer:
Cavill stars alongside Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Part 1’s first five episodes of Season 3 come to Netflix on June 29th with Part 2’s final three episodes dropping a month later on July 27th.
It’s exciting to see the Wild Hunt and join Cavill as Geralt for one last adventure across the Continent, but I do with a heavy heart. This really could have been a brilliant fantasy series in the right hands. Maybe Season 3 will fix Season 2’s shortcomings. Maybe it will be a good ending for those of us who can’t imagine continuing after Cavill leaves. We’ll see . . . .
