Obi-Wan Kenobi has already unleashed at least one major casting surprise in its first two episodes here, the arrival of a young Princess Leia, expert forest runner and kidnap victim in order to lure Obi-Wan out of the shadows after a decade, a tactic which works.
But besides Leia, there are two main cameos that fans are hoping to see in Obi-Wan’s final four episodes, though whether the miniseries decides to become a real series and return for season 2 remains to be seen.
Qui-Gon Jinn: This one seems pretty obvious to me, and the show is already paving the way for Jinn to return as what else? A force ghost. In the “recap” section before the show starts, they made a specific point to show communication from beyond the grave with force ghosts. In the premiere, we also see Obi-Wan call out for his master, but is left in silence.
Past the in-show clues, Liam Neeson has just signed on to voice Qui-Gon in a new animated series, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, where he’ll play a younger version of the character. That signifies to me that if Neeson is returning for this, there’s absolutely no chance we get through Obi-Wan here without seeing him show up to advise his former padawan.
Cal Kestis: Alright, this one is a bit more of a stretch, but there is mounting evidence that Disney may be interested in a live-action Cal Kestis from Respawn’s Fallen Order games.
- We just saw a BD droid show up on Tattooine to aid The Mandalorian in building his new ship, maybe Cal’s actual BD droid, but we’re not sure.
- Obi-Wan uses the Fortress Inquisitorius, a location first seen in Jedi: Fallen Order.
- The timeline lines up, as Cal should be dodging Inquisitors just like Obi-Wan is during this time.
- Cal already has an actual actor playing a 1:1 version of him in the game through Performance Capture, Cameron Monaghan of Shameless and Gotham fame. He’s great, and could obviously instantly transition to being alive action version of the character.
- Respawn has chosen just after the Obi-Wan premiere to announce Jedi: Fallen Order 2, now called Jedi: Survivor. Convenient timing.
It’s just…a lot of stuff that does seem to indicate plans for a live-action iteration of Cal could exist, and the timing works for him to guest star in Obi-Wan, perhaps. I guess we’ll see.
Sure, I suppose there are more potential cameos (Mace Windu!) but these are the main two that stick out in my mind as being the most plausible. We’ll find out over the course of the next four weeks.
