‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Amps Up Sequel With More Big Voice Stars

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is here with familiar stars and new voice cast members including Donald Glover, Glen Powell and Brie Larson.

Based on the blockbuster Nintendo video game, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters nationwide on Wednesday. The sequel comes three years after the release of the worldwide success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office.

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Mario leaves behind the Mushroom Kingdom for a cosmic adventure in space. The sequel also features the return of such characters as Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser, and introduces new characters from the video game.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel and is produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto.

Below is a look at the key characters in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the stars who provide the voices for them.

Mario (Chris Pratt)

Chris Pratt reprises his voice role of Mario from The Super Mario Bros. Movie for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Pratt, who has starred in such blockbuster hits as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World and Avengers movies, has previously voiced roles in such animated features as The LEGO Movie and its sequel, Onward and The Garfield Movie.

Luigi (Charlie Day)

Charlie Day reprises his voice role of Luigi from The Super Mario Bros. Movie for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy)

The Queen’s Gambit, Peaky Blinders and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star’s voice role credits include the animated feature Playmobile: The Movie.

Donald Glover (Yoshi)

Donald Glover joins The Super Mario Bros. movie franchise as the voice of Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Glover, who has starred in such series as Atlanta, Community and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, as well as such movies as Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Martian and Spider-Man: Homecoming, has previously voiced roles in The Lion King, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Mufasa: The Lion King.

Glen Powell (Fox McCloud)

Glen Powell is new to The Super Mario Bros. movie franchise as the voice of Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Powell, who has starred in such films as Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, Anyone But You and Twisters, and the series Scream Queens and Chad Powers, has previous done guest voice roles on such series as Rick and Morty and Family Guy.

Brie Larson (Rosalina)

Brie Larson is also new to The Super Mario Bros. franchise as the voice of Rosalina in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Room, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and The Marvels star has previously voiced roles for the video game Fortnite: Chapter 3 and the animated miniseries Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

Jack Black (Bowser)

Jack Black reprises his voice role of Bowser from The Super Mario Bros. Movie for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Black, who has starred in such films as School of Rock, Goosebumps, the Jumanji movies and A Minecraft Movie, has previously voiced roles in the Kung Fu Panda features and Borderlands.

Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.)

Benny Safdie joins The Super Mario Bros. movie franchise as the voice of Bowser Jr. in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Safdie has starred in such films as Good Time, Oppenheimer and Happy Gilmore 2, as well as the series The Curse. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie marks Safdie’s debut as a voice actor.

Keegan-Michael Key (Toad)

Keegan-Michael Key reprises his voice role of Toad from The Super Mario Bros. Movie for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Key has starred in such films as Dolemite is My Name, The Prom and Wonka, as well as the TV series Key & Peele, Friends from College and Schmigadoon! Key has starred in several voice roles throughout his career, in such animated features as the Hotel Transylvania movies, The LEGO Movie, Wendell & Wild, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, IF and Transformers One.

On television, Key has voiced roles on such shows as Archer and Bob’s Burgers.

Rated PG, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters nationwide on Wednesday.
