Spoilers ahead for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 9.
After Belly and Jeremiah called off their wedding, Belly is on a journey to find herself without the Fisher brothers. Episode 9 marks the start of her Parisian adventure, while Jeremiah and Conrad have to grapple with the consequences of their actions. Read on for a full recap of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 9.
Episode 9 picks up with Belly at the airport, preparing to board her flight to Paris. She spots Conrad sitting in the terminal and begins walking toward him. But she’s next in line to board, so the flight attendant asks for her boarding pass. Conrad doesn’t notice her, so Belly decides to continue on her way toward the plane and avoid interacting with him.
Conrad suddenly looks up and gets a call from Adam, who informs him that Jeremiah called off the wedding. Adam asks Conrad to take care of his brother, and Conrad hesitantly agrees. Meanwhile, Jere is drinking at the bar with his friends, Taylor, Steven and Denise. When Taylor and Steven are about to talk about what’s brewing between them, Conrad shows up at the bar.
Taylor and Steven intercept Conrad before Jere can spot him, and Taylor pulls Conrad aside. “Congrats, you must be thrilled!” she says sarcastically. Conrad admits he messed up completely. Taylor corrects him, saying it’s only 50 percent his fault — the other half belongs to Jere and Belly. Despite Conrad wanting to help his brother, Taylor insists he’s not what Jere needs right now. When Conrad asks if Belly’s okay, Taylor says she doesn’t know, but advises him to give her space for a while.
At the bar, Jeremiah is drunk and says he bets Belly ran away with Conrad. Taylor and Steven assure him that’s not the case. They explain they talked to Conrad, he went back to the Cousins house, nowhere near Belly. “But if she’s not with Conrad, where is she?” he asks. Jeremiah wants to call Belly, but Taylor and Steven urge him not to.
What Happens To Belly In Paris?
Meanwhile, Belly is on the plane to Paris. In her narration, she heartbreakingly says, “I just blew up my life and hurt everyone who’s ever loved me.” The only solution for her was to put an ocean between her and them. When she goes to enroll in the study abroad program for which she was waitlisted, the lady informs her that she missed the deadline. Belly says that she spoke to someone the night before who told her there was still room for her. But he made a mistake, and the program is completely full.
Belly begs that there has to be something they can do, but they’re unable to take her. She calls her mom, and Laurel urges her to come home, but Belly says she can’t go back to Finch. “I just can’t face everyone… They all must hate me,” she says. “Not one hates you, Bean,” her mom responds, adding that they’re all going to get through this, and Belly needs to book a flight back to the U.S. Laurel promises not to tell anyone that she’s there.
The next morning, Taylor and Steven return Jere’s phone to him, and he’s disappointed to see Belly hasn’t called. Laurel visits Jere to check on him and expresses her heartbreak over the entire situation, but he doesn’t believe her. “You never wanted Belly to marry me,” he yells. When Laurel refuses to leave, Jere lashes out and says she’s not his mother. Steven goes back to the house to get Jere some clothes and runs into Conrad, who had the same idea. “There’s no problem for you to fix — you are the problem,” Steven tells Conrad. “Leave him [Jere] alone.”
Taylor brings Jere some food and red Gatorade (which was Conrad’s idea). Jere wants Taylor to tell him the truth: has she heard from Belly? She promises that she hasn’t. “I don’t know what to do without her… how to be. She’s everything, she’s my whole life,” he admits, and he doesn’t know how to let her go. Taylor replies that Belly isn’t his whole life, and if that’s the case, she shouldn’t be.
While Belly’s paying for food at a café, her backpack is stolen. But with the AirTag is inside, she can track the person who took it. It’s inside a nightclub, but she can’t get pass security without a password. She notices a girl, later introduced as Gemma, getting harassed by a man outside the club. She pretends to be her girlfriend to help her, and Gemma gives the password that gets them both inside.
Gemma introduces Belly to her girlfriend, Max, and her friends, Celine and Benito. Belly finally sees the person who stole her bag and confronts him. She kicks the guy and tackles him to the ground before grabbing the backpack.
Do Steven And Taylor Get Back Together?
Back in Cousins, Taylor is explaining how Belly and Conrad’s relationship is deeper than just a high school fling. She mentions how something happened between them during Christmas while they were together in Cousins, which led to Jeremiah’s actions in Cabo. That’s when Steven learns that Jeremiah cheated on Belly over Spring Break. He’s furious. “I’ve been cleaning up that guy’s tears for the past 24 hours, and he cheated on my sister with Lacie Barone?” he yells.
Taylor and Steven finally kiss. She mentions that back at the hospital, when he changed his mind about their relationship, it broke her. He apologizes, and she asks him why he wants her now but didn’t want her then. Steven responds that it’s because she didn’t want him. Now, he wants her to show up for him the same way she shows up for her friends, and she says she can. They both agree that being together is worth the risk.
Over drinks, Belly shares with her new Parisian friends what transpired over the past 36 hours. They question how she could leave Conrad at the airport after he sacrificed everything for her. She explains that she never asked him to upend his life. Her new friends confess that they’ve done far worse things. You can’t navigate your twenties without inflicting some damage along the way, Gemma says.
What Do Belly And Jere Say During Their Phone Call?
When Belly mentions her return flight in five hours, they try to convince her to stay. But she insists she needs to figure out her life back home. On the bus, Belly calls Jeremiah. He admits he was hoping she would call, which surprises her — she thought he wouldn’t want to talk to her. Jeremiah confesses he can’t sleep without her, while Belly shares that she’s been worried about him. He asks what this conversation means and whether she can come home. Belly reveals she’s in Paris and needs time to think.
Jere admits that he has had time to think, too, but he doesn’t think that things have to end, and they can go back to the way things were. Belly replies that she doesn’t think that’s possible — and she doesn’t even know who she is anymore. “I don’t want to hurt you, Jere… I’m not the same person that I was before summer.” She says she needs to discover the person that she can be without him, and that means staying abroad. “Don’t f*cking call me again,” he tells her.
How Does The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 9 End?
Conrad runs into Jeremiah in the kitchen, where one of their mom’s paintings was delivered. Conrad found it in the garage while he was cleaning, and it was intended as a wedding gift for Jere and Belly.
Conrad says he’s sorry, but Jeremiah lies and says he’s fine. Jere finally lets Conrad know that Belly’s in Paris. He says that Belly called him, not Conrad, so that has to mean something. He also tells Conrad that Belly’s staying, and she’s not coming back. “She didn’t choose me, but she didn’t pick you either. So why don’t you get the f*ck out, go back to California and never come back?”
Adam and Conrad meet for a drink before Conrad’s flight, which leaves for West Coast in a few hours. Conrad states that it wasn’t Jere who screwed anything up, it was him. “I told her I loved her… Belly.” When Adam asks why he would do that, Conrad responds that it’s true.
Conrad opens up and says that he doesn’t know what to do. “I ruined the wedding, I ruined everything. I broke him. And the worst part is, I wanted it. I prayed for it, for her to change her mind. How messed up is that?”
He hates that his brother’s hurting so much, but there’s nothing he can do about it. “I don’t think he’ll ever forgive me, and he probably shouldn’t,” he adds. “I give up.”
Adam encourages Conrad to give Jeremiah some space. He explains that’s exactly what he did with Conrad after Susannah died. “You have people who love you, and I trusted that you would lean on them, and you did. And so will he.”
Adam later finds Jeremiah and embraces his son, and Jere breaks down in his arms. Meanwhile, Belly decides to stay in Paris. “I have no idea where I’m headed, what my future is, or who it’s with. But I know this: Rebuilding is always possible. It has to be,” her narration says in the closing scene, as Taylor Swift’s “How Did It End?” plays in the background.
