The Shows The Writer’s Strike Will And Won’t Delay, That We Know About

The writer’s strike has arrived, and the longer it goes on, the more your favorite series are going to be delayed and disrupted. But the rule is, if a show’s script has already been written, it is not breaking the picket lines to then go and film that show (but no rewrites). But if a show hadn’t starting writing yet or is mid-writing, the WGA members will cease writing it until the strike is resolved.

That has led to a number of shows revealing that they are written and will air as planned, or will be delayed because of the strike.

So far, here are the shows we know about in each category.

Scripts Finished Pre-Strike:

  • Andor Season 2
  • House of the Dragon season 2
  • Dead City season 1
  • Daryl Dixon season 1
  • Rick and Michonne season 1
  • Interview with the Vampire season 2
  • Mayfair Witches season 2
  • Nancy Drew season 4
  • Riverdale season 8
  • The Mandalorian season 4

Scripts Unfinished, Shutdown or Delays

  • All late night talk shows
  • Saturday Night Live
  • Abbott Elemetnary season 3
  • Cobra Kai season 6
  • Hacks season 3
  • Yellowjackets season 3
  • Big Mouth season 7
  • (Possible, unconfirmed) Stranger Things season 5

These lists are going to continue to expand over time, as not every network or group of writers has confirmed what is or is not going to air this early. In general, streaming services tend to have more of a back catalog built up to air during the gaps, but their delays could be felt longer into the future. Broadcast TV is more likely to be impacted, and the most immediate shutdowns are late night shows, which write scripts each week.

We do see a number of big shows like Andor, House of the Dragon and The Mandalorian all done, but if those scripts are done, no work can being on the next seasons of those shows (well, Andor is done) until the strike is resolved. One interesting thing to note is that AMC has somehow finished all its scripts already, including three different Walking Dead shows, and have proudly announced that. Two are done filming, one is about to air, and Rick and Michonne is currently filming with scripts already written. I guess they really plan ahead.

Still, the longer this goes on, the worse its going to get, at least judging by how badly things went during the 2007 WGA strike, which delayed some shows and butchered others with rushed, bad seasons. We’ll see what happens this time, but hopefully the WGA’s demands are met soon.
