Key Facts
Insidious: The Red Door brought in an additional $31.4 million overseas in what Sony Pictures Entertainment is calling “the biggest opening for a horror movie since 2019.”
The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious franchise, earned the second-best opening of the series after Insidious: Chapter 2, which brought in nearly $40.3 million in its opening weekend in 2013, according to BoxOffice Mojo.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny slipped into the No. 2 spot, earning $26.5 million in its second week in U.S. theaters, bringing its worldwide total earnings to $248 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Surprising Fact
This isn’t the first time an Indiana Jones film has slipped into second place in its second weekend in theaters. When Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered in 2008 it earned more than $100 million in its opening weekend. In its second weekend in theaters it fell into second place, earning $44 million, after Sex the City premiered to a $57 million opening weekend, according to BoxOffice Mojo.
Key Background
With a reported budget of just $16 million, Insidious: The Red Door comes more than five years after the most recent Insidious film was released. The first four films in the franchise all earned under $40 million in their opening weekends. None of the films surpassed the $100 million mark in their domestic box office lifetime. Insidious: The Red Door is directed by Patrick Wilson and stars Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, Andrew Astor and Wilson. The film has a 37% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and 71% score from audiences.
Tangent
Meanwhile, Sound of Freedom, a crowd-funded low-budget thriller film from Angel Studios, took home the No. 3 spot. The film, which was released Tuesday, has earned $37 million in its six days in theaters, according to Variety. The film tells the true story of Tim Ballard, a former Department of Homeland Security agent who tries to save children who have been sex trafficked. But the film has been criticized for its the way it portrays child exploitation and because both Ballard and Jim Caviezel, who plays him in the film, have expressed openness to QAnon or similar conspiracy theories in the past, according to Variety.
