‘The Night Agent’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show

Well, I can’t say I saw this one coming. The Night Agent, one of Netflix’s most-watched new series ever, renewed almost instantly after performing so well, has finally lost its #1 slot in the top 10 list.

No, it’s not to Beef, the excellent Steven Yeun and Ali Wong series that has debuted to sky-high critic and audience reviews, and landed at #2 on the top 10 list. But rather, The Night Agent has been dethroned by Love is Blind, Netflix’s most successful reality series that only seems to be snowballing in interest over time.

Like many of Netflix’s reality shows, this is a series that airs its episodes in batches so people can’t skip straight to the end and see the final results. As such, people talk week to week about the developments, though somehow Netflix has not decided to apply this philosophy to almost all of their scripted shows, still letting those be binged in a day or a weekend.

As for Love is Blind, I really have watched this show skyrocket in popularity, anecdotally, in addition to total hours watched. My wife’s friend group used to talk about The Bachelor and Bachelorette developments, but now they talk about Love is Blind on a weekly basis. I watched the first two seasons and I mean, it’s reality show insanity (propose to a person you’ve never seen before and marry them within a month), but it certainly can be entertaining. I would expect essentially infinite seasons of this series out of Netflix, as it’s more popular than say, Too Hot to Handle or The Circle, as we’ve almost never seen those top the chart like this.

Elsewhere in the list, I am definitely concerned about Shadow and Bone, which is still hanging around the Top 10, but got pretty obliterated by The Night Agent, and may not have the numbers to justify a third and final season, nor the Six of Crows spin-off that’s already being written which fans want to see.

Number seven is Hoarders, showing Netflix licensed content is still doing well after all this time. I don’t know what #4’s Transatlantic is, but it looks to be at least vaguely Downton Abby-ish, albeit set in the 40s and starring, I was surprised to see, Community’s Gillian Jacobs in the lead role. That’s certainly interesting.

I do hope a lot of people watch Beef, which has slipped to number three. Finishing the show, I’m still not entirely sure it’s even meant to have a second season, but frankly, I don’t think it needs one. So know you can watch it and still feel satisfied by the end. I’d say both Yeun and Wong deserve Emmy nominations for their roles in this, but we’ll see if that actually happens.
