The next game from the studio behind Elden Ring releases this summer, but it’s not another Dark Souls style action-RPG.
FromSoftware’s upcoming title is Armored Core VI: Fires Of Rubicon and it’s slated to launch this summer.
Here’s the trailer:
All I can say is . . . wow. This looks intense. From what I’ve heard, Armored Core is generally considered more challenging than Dark Souls. Let that sink in a little bit.
“There will be a rich variety of powerful enemies of all shapes and sizes,” game director Masaru Yamamura told the PlayStation blog. “Huge combat helicopters, heavily armored mobile turrets, and unmanned heavy demolition machinery that’s programmed to indiscriminately crush intruders. Armored Core VI will offer a number of explosive battle experiences that challenge players to fight against the odds and overcome these ginormous, more abnormal mechs.”
While I’m a diehard Dark Souls fan—and this includes Bloodborne, Sekiro, Demon’s Souls and Elden Ring—I never got into the Armored Core series. It’s been around quite a bit longer than Souls games. The first in the series came out 25 years ago. It’s been 10 years since the fifth entry released.
Fires Of Rubicon looks epic beyond all reckoning. Bosses are gargantuan metal monstrosities that make Elden Ring’s bosses look tiny by comparison. The industrial-space environments are huge, sprawling, dystopian arenas. Chambers to be explored in every direction, with flight a major component of gameplay.
According to Yamamura: “It’s an intricate and multi-layered world, brimming with mega-structures and enormous underground facilities built by its former inhabitants. These structures cover a planetary surface wracked with extreme cold and contamination in the aftermath of the great disaster, and the player will be exploring these various environments as they proceed.”
As much as an Elden Ring sequel or a new Bloodborne would be up my alley, I’m actually glad that From is coming out with something different, even if it’s even more daunting. A new Armored Core is exciting in ways a new Souls game wouldn’t be, simply because I’m not familiar with the series. I’ll be gearing up my Armored Core when the game releases on August 25th, 2023. It’s coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
