If like me, you just finished binging The Midnight Club on Netflix, the latest horror series from Mike Flanagan, you may have one central question:
There’s going to be a season 2, right?
The Midnight Club ends on a large number of cliffhangers and unfinished storylines, seemingly demanding a second season for itself. While this is not unusual for many shows, it is unusual for a Mike Flanagan series, and something I wasn’t expecting to see here. The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass were all self-contained, one season stories, and I was expecting the same from The Midnight Club.
However, The Midnight Club is both a huge passion project of Flanagan’s, something he’s been trying to make for decades, and it’s also based on books that have more stories that can be adapted for future seasons. So he designed the show to need a second season, and banked on his goodwill with Netflix to make that happen. But we do not have an official declaration that season 2 is coming yet, and it’s too early to know just how Midnight Club is performing.
What we do know is what Flanagan has said about season 2 specifically. Here he is via Elite Daily:
“This was designed to be ongoing,” Flanagan said. “We probably won’t know for another month or so what Netflix wants to do. But this was very much designed to continue. Pike has many books, and so we have a lot of incredible material to pull from.”
“We didn’t answer some of the bigger questions of the season — those answers exist, but were meant to be for the next season,” he said. If season 2 doesn’t happen, he’ll answer the questions in an…unusual way. “I’ll put them up on Twitter,” he said.
Those plotlines Flanagan is referring to? Now that the show is out, we know what they are. Spoilers follow.
- The final moment of the season reveals that Stanton has a Paragon tattoo. I am almost positive she is the daughter of the old cult leader who doesn’t speak to her mom anymore. It also appears that she may be dying herself.
- We never got any real answers about the creepy old man and old woman who keep appearing to Ilona and Kevin specifically, other than that they could be “years eaters.”
- Kevin in particular keeps appearing from the vision when Ilona experiences it. Like the old man keeps turning into him when Ilona wakes up. That happened a few times and makes me suspicious.
- I’m not sure we know who was actually living down in the basement originally with the bed down there and everything.
- We still fundamentally don’t know if the house and the ritual can heal people or not. You can chalk up the two healings so far to potential misdiagnoses or natural good luck, and it seems Shasta is probably sick again anyway.
- We don’t know for sure if the members of the Midnight Club can stick around as ghosts and communicate in anything other than maybe extremely tiny ways. The only ghost-like beings we see are the old man and woman, and the death shadow that seems to follow those who are closest to death.
- Why is Mark so nice and normal?? It’s weird!
Anyway, we’ll have to hope for a season 2 and we’ll see when Netflix comments on that officially. Like Flanagan says, it may be a month or so.
