“The Masked Singer” celebrated the decade that brought us MTV, CDs and statement-making shoulder pads with an episode devoted to the ‘80s Monday night.
As expected, it all started off with a trio of costumed celebrities belting out hits of the era. And by the time it was over, viewers learned the hidden identities included one beloved sitcom star and one reality TV realtor.
But one competitor remained a mystery.
The first contestant of the night was Doll, a stitched together plaything with one button eye, a sparkling purple dress, towering heels and a raspy rocker voice. The mystery man sang a 1985 hit from “The Breakfast Club” soundtrack, Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).”
Hints about who was behind the mask included hairspray and a playbill, with “CHiPS” star Erik Estrada stopping by with a bonus clue that read, “Ghostwriter.”
Scorpio, a glittering gold arachnid with an impressive stinger, hit the stage next with her energetic rendition of Cindi Lauper’s 1983 chart topper, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”
Her hints included a photo of a house and sunset imagery, with a bonus coming from rapper Young MC, who let a couple of dancers act out his clue, the Sprinkler dance.
Next up was a far less energetic performance from Moose, a man who sang a 1985 single from Huey Lewis and the News, “The Power of Love,” while seated on a platform surrounded by dancing drinks.
Moose’s hints were hotdogs, a bear and beer. “Dallas” star Charlene Tilton brought in the bonus topic of acceptance speeches, which Moose didn’t know much about. Viewers soon had the chance to know a lot more about the man with the antlers though, since he was the first to get the boot.
With clues that seemed to point to Chicago and a bar, it wasn’t exactly a shock to see the face behind the fur—Norm!
“Cheers” star George Wendt, 74, who played Norm Peterson from 1982 to 1993 on the classic small-screen comedy, earned raves from the audience when he took his horns off. (And if anyone was left wondering about his bonus clue, the actor was nominated for a supporting Emmy six times but, inexplicably, never won.)
The remaining two celebrity contestants then faced offed for the chance to keep their faces hidden a little longer with dueling performances of Duran Duran’s 1982 track, “Hungry Like the Wolf.”
Only one could win and that honor went to Doll, leaving Scorpio to shed part of her exoskeleton for fans.
Who was under all that? A familiar face from Netflix’s “Selling Sunset.”
Reality TV real estate agent Christine Quinn took a final bow, as fans were left to ponder Doll’s true identity.
