If you’ve been wondering why Din and Grogu have been taking a relative backseat to Bo-Katan and other Mandalorians this season on The Mandalorian, well, it appears that’s by design, and the original mission of the show, the Young Wolf and Cub set-up of Mando and Baby Yoda, is not really the scope of the series now.
Executive producer Rick Famuyiwa spoke with IGN about The Mandalorian, and why the show has essentially morphed into “The Mandalorians.”
“I think now with Bo possessing the Darksaber, I know that there was a lot of expectations that might have shifted both in terms of what it meant for Din Djarin, but also for Bo and what does it mean?,” he said.
“Who is the Mandalorian at this point? And so I think it could be anyone. And I think that’s what they’re trying to define in many ways, is what does that mean to be Mandalorian?”
That quote has alarmed many fans who have tuned into the show for going on three years because mainly of…The Mandalorian himself, Din Djarin and his relationship with Grogu. But now they’re trying to say the titular Mandalorian could be any Mandalorian, and I do have to wonder if this may be heading toward Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan quite literally taking the show over entirely from Pedro Pascal’s Din.
There are a lot of things at play here. There’s also a Dave Filoni-directed movie coming up that he views as the culmination of his current projects, namely The Mandalorian and the upcoming Ahsoka, which I have to imagine is some sort of giant crossover event. But though some places are interpreting this as the end of Din and Grogu one way or another, Filoni does say it’s not necessarily a finale. Though sure, it’s possible that could be when Din is written out.
The other factor here is Pedro Pascal. Jon Favreau has talked about how he doesn’t really see a fixed ending for The Mandalorian, though with this new information, it seems like the show may very well continue on without Pascal’s Din at some point. Pascal is a hugely in-demand actor at this point, also starring in HBO’s biggest show right now, The Last of Us, which caused this season of Mando to be delayed. It’s also sort of an odd situation as Pedro is only rarely the guy in the actual helmet, as stuntmen or other actors are in there instead, and he’s just doing the voicework later. So it’s possible Pascal just doesn’t want to be attached to this specific role forever with so many other potential projects on deck.
I do understand why fans aren’t wild about the “well The Mandalorian could be any Mandalorians or all Mandalorians” idea, as that’s really not what people were sold on in the first place, and the rebuilding of Mandalore, though important for lore reasons, may not be as good or well-done as just…Din and Grogu going around doing thing like in the early seasons of the show. But we’ll have to see how this evolves.
