Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King — the live-action CGI prequel to the live-action version of The Lion King — has officially ended its run in theaters. How much did the film make at the box office?
Starring the voice of Aaron Pierre in the title role, Mufasa: The Lion King opened in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024. The logline for Mufasa: The Lion King reads, “Mufasa, a cub lost and alone, meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny.”
Directed by Oscar-winning Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King also stars the voices of Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, who is destined to become Skar. The young Mufasa is voiced by Braelyn Rankins, while Theo Somolu provides the voice of the young Taka.
The film also stars the voices of Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, John Kani, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Blue Ivy Carter and Donald Glover — who reprises his role as the adult Simba from 2019’s live-action version of The Lion King.
As indicated by this weekend’s theater count list by The Numbers, Mufasa: The Lion King ended its theatrical run on Thursday, when it made $2,509 from 30 North American theaters to bring its domestic tally to $254,567,693.
Along with the film’s international tally of $465,374,104, Mufasa: The Lion King had a worldwide box office gross of $719,941,797 against a $200 million production budget before prints and advertising, The Numbers reported.

How Does ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Compare To Disney’s Other Live-Action Adaptations?
While Mufasa: The Lion King’s origins are in hand-drawn animation via the 1994 classic The Lion King, the film isn’t technically considered a live-action adaptation since it wasn’t produced first as an animated film. Instead, it is a prequel to a live-action adaptation.
As such, Mufasa: The Lion King isn’t listed on box office statistical sites like Box Office Mojo, which has a list of the top 17 domestic-grossing Disney live-action adaptations of films in its animated library.
If Mufasa: The Lion King were allowed to have a place on the list, its $254.5 million North American tally would come in at No. 6, behind the 2010 live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland at No. 5 with a final domestic gross of $334.1 million.
No. 1 on the list of highest domestic-grossing Disney live-action films is 2019’s The Lion King, followed by 2017’s Beauty and the Beast with $504 million, 2016’s The Jungle Book with $364 million and 2019’s Aladdin with $355.5 million.
To date, the highest-grossing Disney live-action adaptation worldwide is 2019’s The Lion King, which earned $1.6 billion.
If Mufasa: The Lion King were allowed on the worldwide list of highest-grossing Disney live-action adaptations, its $719.9 million global gross would place it at No. 7 on the list behind 2014’s Sleeping Beauty adaptation Maleficent ($759.8 million), The Jungle Book ($967.7 million), Alice in Wonderland ($1.025 billion), Aladdin ($1.054 billion) and Beauty and the Beast ($1.2 billion).
Mufasa: The Lion King made its debut on streaming video on demand on Disney+ in March.
