The wait is over: Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is now available to stream. The film quickly arrived on digital video-on-demand platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+ following its theatrical release in mid-September. Read on to learn how to purchase or rent the third and final installment at home.
Created by Julian Fellowes (The Gilded Age), The Grand Finale marks the conclusion of the beloved British franchise that began as an ITV and PBS television series running from 2010 to 2015. The acclaimed show earned 15 Emmy awards and garnered an impressive 69 nominations throughout its six-season run.
The third film in the trilogy follows the Crawley family and their staff as they navigate life in the 1930s. “When Mary finds herself at the center of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace,” the synopsis reads. “The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future.”
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale had a solid run in theaters, earning $38 million domestically and $77 million worldwide. However, the sequel didn’t match up to the commercial success of the first two films. Downton Abbey (2019) grossed $194 million worldwide, while Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022) generated $94 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Despite its lower box office numbers, the sequel received glowing reviews from both fans and critics of the British historical drama. Audiences awarded the film a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics following close behind at an impressive 92%.
Clarisse Loughrey from Independent UK called the sequel “about as graceful and fitting an endnote as you could hope for.”
For her review in the Associated Press, film critic Jocelyn Noveck wrote: “This final movie will give loyal Downton fans what they want: a satisfying bit of closure and the sense that the future, though a bit scary, may look kindly on Downton Abbey as long as Mary is in charge.”
