A 2022 demand from manager Xavi Hernandez has led to a goals explosion from Pedri at FC Barcelona.
The midfielder scored the winner and only goal of the game in the Blaugrana’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Sunday, which put them 11 points clear of bitter rivals Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table.
The strike was his fourth this term in a match that ended with such a scoreline, and considering that another of his total six goals in the league came in a 2-1 win over Osasuna, Pedri’s goals have been worth an extra 10 points by making potential draws into wins.
Had these strikes not been put away, Barca would be just a single point in front of Real Madrid, who have a game in hand on the Catalans following their trip to Morocco to play the Club World Cup last week.
Pedri’s goals are therefore worth their weight in gold. But as revealed by Relevo, they might have never come to fruition had Xavi not made an important demand of his number ‘8’ which Pedri revealed in a February 2022 press conference.
“Ever since last season finished, I always thought that I have to arrive in the box a lot more,” Pedri began, when asked about his newfound emergence on the score sheet.
“Everyone – all the trainers that I have had – said it and it’s something that I’m working on. Xavi also demands it from me, that I have to be there because a rebound can fall for you and you could score a goal.
“And the truth is that yes, it’s something that I want to improve and well… now it’s paying off because I’ve scored two goals in a short time and I hope I can continue like that.”
Continue like that he has, and after clinching the Spanish Super Cup last month, Pedri and Xavi are now on the cusp of delivering a first La Liga crown since 2019 to Camp Nou.
With a four man midfield also helping him get forward more, Pedri’s exploits in and around the area as important to the cause as the stingy defense that has leaked just seven goals all term.
