Topline
The newest installment in the Fast & Furious film franchise easily topped the box office this weekend—but it lags behind many of the other films in the franchise by opening weekend box office numbers and critics’ scores.
Key Facts
Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious film series and eleventh overall in the franchise, was the top earner at the domestic box office this weekend with $67.5 million, besting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which took second and third place, respectively.
Fast X performed well at the global box office, bringing in $251 million in international markets for a worldwide opening weekend of about $319 million.
The film boasts a star-studded cast: Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, John Cena, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron are among the film’s stars.
The newest Fast & Furious installment had the fourth-lowest domestic opening weekend for a main series film—or the fifth-lowest in the franchise, counting 2019 spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw—and it has the franchise’s fourth-lowest combined Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores.
Furious 7 is the most critically and commercially successful film in the franchise so far—it made more than $1.5 billion at the global box office after its 2015 debut.

Big Number
$340 million. That’s how much Fast X cost to make, The Wrap reported. That makes it the most expensive film in the Fast & Furious franchise by nearly $100 million. The second-most expensive film, The Fate of the Furious, reportedly cost between $250 million and $270 million to produce, Deadline reported.
Surprising Fact
After 11 films, the Fast & Furious franchise won’t be ending any time soon. A sequel to Fast X is set to hit theaters in 2025, Vin Diesel announced at CinemaCon last month. Louis Leterrier is reportedly set to direct, with Dwayne Johnson reportedly set to return. Diesel also announced spin-off films, including a female-led movie, are in the works.
Key Background
The Rotten Tomatoes critics score, known as the Tomatometer, is the percentage of critics who have given the film a positive review. A movie with at least 60% positive reviews is given a fresh tomato, while those with a score of less than 60% are given a splat. Metacritic calculates a weighted average of critics’ reviews, assigning different weights to each critic and publication, depending on importance or quality. Scores are displayed in green, yellow or red—indicating favorable, mixed or unfavorable reviews—and films with a score of at least 81% are designated as “must-see.” Both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic track user ratings and allow users to write reviews, though these are displayed separately from critics’ scores.
