The following is a non-exhaustive, but still fairly expansive, list of upcoming sci-fi, fantasy and comic book shows (and the occasional non-genre show that I’m interested in covering) headed to streaming services and traditional TV channels in 2022.
I had originally planned a shorter list with more detailed descriptions of each show, but I ended up expanding this to include not just upcoming shows but shows that release throughout 2022 and perhaps won’t air until 2023. While many of these have release dates, a whole bunch are TBA as well.
The shows in the following list range from adult animated titles like Vox Machina to more kid-friendly fare such as the bevy of Star Wars shows headed to Disney Plus. Speaking of Star Wars, The Book Of Boba Fett is kind of a letdown, but I’m still hopeful about The Mandalorian Season 3 and the various other live-action shows headed to Disney Plus set in a galaxy far, far away.
Some titles I’m especially looking forward to include Willow on Disney Plus, Amazon’s twisted superhero show The Boys Season 3 and the Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon. I’m thrilled that we’re getting another season of the wonderfully hilarious, Alan Tudyk-led Resident Alien, and from what I’ve seen of Amazon’s Critical Role RPG-based Vox Machina so far, that’s going to be a real gem.
I’m also curious to see how Vikings: Valhalla does on Netflix and how it will compare to the original Vikings show (RIP Ragnar, though Travis Fimmel goes even crazier in Raised By Wolves which lands for a second season on HBO in February). Speaking of Netflix, I need to start watching the new Korean zombie show All Of Us Are Dead. Nobody does zombies as good as Koreans for whatever reason. Train To Busan and Kingdom are on a whole nother level.
Later on in the year we have Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power to look forward to (but ugh, what a mouthful) as well as the raunchy, gory superhero spoof The Boys, also on Amazon Prime. And at long last, Stranger Things 4 will land sometime this summer. The kids are all now in their mid-40s though, so that might be an issue.
