‘The Batman’ Tops ‘Batman V Superman’ As ‘Spider-Man’ Crosses $800 Million

In holdover news for the weekend, The Batman earned another $20.5 million, dropping a reasonable 44% in weekend four to bring its 24-day cume to $331.951 million. That puts it past the $312-$330 million likes of Iron Man 2, Thor: Ragnarök, Iron Man, Deadpool 2, Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’ll pass the over/under $335 million likes of Guardians of the Galaxy, Joker, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Joker on a day or three.

It’ll soon be DC’s second-biggest non-sequel superhero movie outside of Wonder Woman ($412.5 million) and Warner Bros.’ fourth-biggest superhero flick behind Wonder Woman and Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight sequels ($533 million and $449 million). With $673 million worldwide (including $17 million in China and $21.5 million total in IMAX), The Batman is past Fantastic Beasts 2 ($655 million) and Justice League ($658 million) as WB’s fourth-biggest film since 2017 behind only It ($700 million), Aquaman ($1.1 billion) and Joker ($1 billion).

Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home became the third film ever to cross $800 million domestic. The MCU actioner $2 million in its 15th weekend to bring its cume to $800.6 million. Globally, the Tom Holland/Zendaya flick has earned $1.088 billion overseas and $1.88 billion worldwide. Sony’s Uncharted earned another $5 million (-36%) in weekend six to bring its domestic cume to $133.5 million. That’s past Tomb Raider ($131 million in 2001) among video game-based movies domestically, behind only Detective Pikachu ($146 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog ($148 million).

The $120 million Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg flick earned another $7.7 million overseas for a $358 million worldwide total. That’s above Angry Birds Movie ($355 million) and below just Rampage ($428 million), Detective Pikachu ($430 million) and Warcraft ($440 million). A soft run in China will keep it under $400 million, and it’ll likely advance no further on the worldwide box office list for video game movies. Of course, it’s still a big hit and may yet top Pokémon and Sonic domestically.

Meanwhile, Universal and Illumination’s Sing 2 earned another $1.28 million (-12%) in weekend 14 to bring its cume to $160.26 million. That’s past the $159 million cume of The Secret Life of Pets 2 in 2019. The $80 million animated musical sequel has grossed $387 million worldwide, passing Black Widow ($380 million) on the “Covid-era” list. It may join Eternals and Dune in the $400 million club. I won’t use this as a chance to drag Disney for not giving Pixar’s Turning Red ($11 million worldwide) a conventional theatrical release. Nope, not gonna do that.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie dropped an understandable 75% in weekend two, still earning $4.6 million for a $27.7 million ten-day total. It has earned $159 million worldwide. Meanwhile, A24’s X earned $2.2 million (-48%) for an $8.3 million ten-day total, while MGM’s Dog earned $2.1 million (-47%) for a $58 million 38-day total. So, yeah, all in all, four of the top eight movies star either Tom Holland or Channing Tatum.
