The Narrow Road to the Deep North
If you’re browsing for shows to watch, it can often be overwhelming given the roughly 10,000 options across ten different streaming services at any given time. But today, there’s a series that’s an easy recommendation, and one that clearly enough people are not watching.
That would be The Narrow Road to the Deep North on Amazon Prime Video, an original miniseries from the service that stars Euphoria/Priscilla’s Jacob Elordi in a role that’s earning him a ton of praise, and possibly even an Emmy nomination in the coming year (albeit in a crowded limited series field with Adolescence actors no doubt in there). Here’s the synopsis:
“Set against the shadow of WWII, The Narrow Road to the Deep North tells the epic story of Lieutenant Colonel Dorrigo Evans (Jacob Elordi), a prisoner of war, whose memory of his one true love helps him to survive the darkest of times.”
The problem? It’s obvious that not enough people are watching it, given its placement on Amazon Prime Video’s top 10 list for its original shows. Despite these high scores, it’s being overlooked and is all the way down at #8, and it deserves to be doing better than that. Here’s the top 10 list on Amazon as it stands:
- Bosch: Legacy
- The Wheel of Time
- Reacher
- House of David
- The Bondsman
- Invincible
- The Godfather of Harlem
- The Narrow Road to the Deep North
- The Chosen
- Leverage: Redemption
None of these series are as highly rated as The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and of the shows here, I’d say only The Wheel of Time and Invincible are worth watching at the moment (sorry this season of Reacher was not good). For the prospects of the show, I don’t think the placement matters because it’s not trying to get renewed for a second season as a miniseries, but in terms of just…watching good TV, you should be checking it out, as it really is fantastic.
Sure, it takes a certain kind of viewer to appreciate it, one that likes war dramas and their peaks and troughs. I also think it’s probably worth viewing as another look at Jacob Elordi who is slowly become a top dramatic actor in his age range, and has a number of higher profile projects to come, even as he will in fact return for the endlessly delayed Euphoria season 3. Give him a shot.
