Without winning a pennant, playoff game, or World Series in 2022, the Texas Rangers have still managed to repeat a windfall from baseball.
That’s because the franchise has been awarded the 2024 All-Star Game, to be played at Globe Life Field on July 16 of that year. The five-day event is expected to generate up to $100 million for the team and its host community of Arlington, TX.
Commissioner Rob Manfred awarded the game Thursday, reminding team owners that the Rangers bailed out the game by offering their new ballpark to host a “neutral site” World Series during the virus-shortened 2020 season.
“Major League Baseball is pleased to award the 2024 All-Star Game to the Rangers and the Cities of Arlington and Fort Worth, which presented a robust bid for All-Star Week,” Manfred said in a statement.
“The Rangers stepped up under difficult circumstances and Globe Life Field served as terrific host for the 2020 Postseason, including the World Series.”
The 94th Midsummer Classic will be the first played at Globe Life Field, which became the newest park in the major leagues when it opened in 2020. The Rangers previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1995 at The Ballpark in Arlington, their former home.
Last summer, the All-Star Game was played at Dodger Stadium but the next two will be hosted by American League West teams. The Seattle Mariners have the 2023 game.
Seattle television station KING 5 reported in July that game could generate $50-$100 million for the team, the city, the State of Washington, and the Pacific Northwest. That figure matches the estimated take from the Dodger Stadium game of 2022.
All-Star festivities include such revenue-raising events as the Futures Game, Home Run Derby, a celebrity softball game, and Play Ball, an ongoing baseball World’s Fair formerly known as FanFest. All of those events have corporate sponsors and most of them are televised, drawing additional advertising revenue.
In addition to buying tickets for live events at the ballpark, fans can even purchase tickets to get autographs from former players, many of them All-Stars.
Globe Life Field, which seats 40,300 on seven different levels, is the third home park the Rangers have had since coming to the Dallas-Fort Worth area from Washington after the 1971 season. They initially played at Arlington Stadium but moved to the Ballpark at Arlington two years later. That stadium’s name changed to Ameriquest Field, Rangers Ballpark, and eventually Globe Life Park in Arlington, housing the team from 1994-2019.
The Rangers reached the World Series in 2010 and 2011 but lost both times.
When the 2020 campaign was shortened from the normal 162 to just 60 because of the highly-contagious COVID-19 virus, many teams played games without fans, substituting cardboard silhouettes and canned crowd noise instead. The Rangers offered their ballpark to Major League Baseball as a neutral site for postseason play.
With its retractable roof, controlled climate, and state-of-the-art facilities, the park was picked, along with three California stadiums, to host the 2020 playoffs and World Series.
National League Division Series and Championship Series games were played there, along with the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays.
The next two All-Star games will be hosted by AL West teams, since the Seattle Mariners are hosting the 2023 contest. The 2025 host has not yet been announced, but the 2026 game will be in Philadelphia to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
