Tether is officially ending support for USDT on five older blockchains, citing low demand and a shift in strategic focus.
The networks affected include Omni Layer, EOS, Algorand, Bitcoin Cash SLP, and Kusama. Token redemptions and transfers will be halted by September 1, giving users time to migrate their funds.
The move finalizes a phase-out process that began last year, when Tether partially paused activity on several of these chains. Despite offering to resume support if usage rebounded, interest remained low.
CEO Paolo Ardoino described the decision as part of a broader plan to prioritize scalability, developer activity, and community engagement. With many of the deprecated chains now considered outdated, Tether is doubling down on infrastructure that reflects the current landscape of digital assets.
The company has increasingly backed Layer 2 networks like the Lightning Network and plans to expand support across similar protocols moving forward. Rather than launching its own blockchain, Tether is focusing on integrating with systems that improve transaction efficiency and broaden stablecoin utility.
This realignment underscores Tether’s commitment to staying agile amid rapid changes in the crypto space and reallocating resources to platforms better suited for future growth.
