Temple University parted ways with head men’s basketball coach Aaron McKie after four seasons and announced that he “will transition into a new role as a special advisor to the athletics department.”
McKie finished with a 52-56 record in four seasons at Temple, including a 16-16 record in 2022-23. The Owls placed fifth in the American Athletic Conference this season with a 10-8 record and were the only AAC team to defeat No. 1 Houston in the regular season, posting a 56-55 road win on Jan. 22. It was one of two wins over Top 25 opponents this season as Temple also knocked off No. 16 Villanova, 68-64, on Nov. 11.
“I want to thank Aaron for his service to Temple these past nine seasons, both as an assistant and head coach,” said athletic director Arthur Johnson in a statement. “Aaron has been a role model both as a student-athlete, a professional player and as our coach, representing the University and the program in the finest manner. We are extremely grateful for his service to Temple and the men’s basketball program.”
“I want to thank Temple for the opportunity and privilege to serve as the head coach men’s basketball coach,” said McKie. “I wish nothing but the best for Temple’s student-athletes and the University moving forward. Temple has been and always will be home for me and I wish the program nothing but success.”
One coach being targeted to replace McKie is Colgate coach Matt Langel, a Moorestown, N.J. native who has taken the Raiders to four straight NCAA Tournaments. Langel is a highly respected coach who has also been linked to Notre Dame after former coach Mike Brey retired.
Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry is also linked to the Notre Dame and Georgetown jobs.
