TelevisaUnivision and Brazil’s media giant Globo announced they’ve sealed a three-year deal that expands the distribution of original content of both companies on each other’s platforms.
The agreement allows Globoplay to premiere TelevisaUnivision’s productions from its Mexican free-to-air channel Las Estrellas and streaming platform ViX+, in addition to giving Brazilian streamer Globoplay access to Televisa’s older but big television hits.
Both companies say the deal “strengthens the relationship” among them, while also boosting volume content and raising visibility of their programming.
“After months of teamwork, it is a great pleasure to see the expansion of the reach of important international productions that carry the las estrellas and ViX+ brands, through a leading streaming platform such as Globoplay,” said Guillermo Borensztein, TelevisaUnivision’s SVP Content Licensing and Co-Productions. “Our content offering through this platform in Brazil is a new step in this long-term strategic collaboration between two leading media companies.”
The expanded agreement follows a strategic alliance for content distribution and co-production revealed at MIPCOM 2022 in October, initially involving the Brazilian telenovela Todas las flores (All the Flowers), which will premiere on ViX+, and the recently launched international ViX+ productions La mujer del diablo (The Devil’s Woman), which will premiere in March on Globoplay, and Travesuras de la niña mala (The Bad Girl), based on Nobel Prize winning author Mario Vargas Llosa’s book.
Under the terms of the agreement, Globoplay will premiere at least four TelevisaUnivision titles per year. The first three, from Televisa’s greatest hits vault, will premiere in 2023. La candidata (The Candidate), starring Silvia Martinez and Victor Gonzalez and previously unreleased in Brazil is scheduled, is set to debut in June; El privilegio de amar (The Right to Love), the 1998 telenovela starring Adela Noriega and René Strickle that became one of the highest rated in Mexico’s history, and 2001’s La intrusa (The Outsider), starring Gabriela Spanic (La usurpadora) and Arturo Peniche, are both scheduled to premiere in Brazil in September.
Globoplay’s streaming catalog already includes other hits from Las Estrellas channel, such as Rubi, Marimar and Maria la del barrio, both starring Thalia, La usurpadora, and the recently launched remake of Los ricos también lloran (The Rich Also Cry).
“They are stories that became a reference in the affective memory of the public, classics that traveled the world and became history,” stated Teresa Penna, director of Globoplay and Digital Audiovisual Products.
This new agreement is one more step to consolidate the partnership with TelevisaUnivision and reinforces Globoplay’s already robust streaming catalog, which includes original telenovelas, TV Globo classics and international telenovelas, guaranteeing access to the Brazilian audience, passionate about this type of content, quality and diversity of titles.”
