With all 12 episodes of Ted Lasso’s third season now streaming on Apple TV+, the biggest question still lingering on the minds of its many fans is Will there be more?
What began as a story centered around American football coach Ted Lasso (played by Emmy winner Jason Sudeikis) being hired to coach the AFC Richmond football (soccer to us Americans) team in England has evolved over the years into a captivating ensemble-led series, filled with gifted actors receiving their own unique storyline from its writers. With a total of 40 Emmy nominations and 11 wins so far between its first two seasons, including back-to-back Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series, there is no doubt that the Ted Lasso cast, crew and even its loyal fanbase are hoping to score big once again as season three is submitted for Emmy consideration.
I spoke with several of the Ted Lasso stars in attendance last Saturday at the Apple TV+ For Your Consideration (FYC) event at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California, where I asked these beloved AFC Richmond actors what messages they would like to say to their fans all across the world, people who have championed this series since it first premiered in 2020 and continue to “Believe” that there is more story needing to be told.
“Love you! I love you for many reasons,” said Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie Tartt. “I think there’s a lot of people who have also seen themselves in Jamie. They’ve seen like conceited in him and sort of like arrogance that we all have at times, and I think that they see the progression that he’s had. They’ve been with him the whole time. Thank you for sticking with him.”
“I love them so much and I hope they know that,” said Charlie Hiscock, who plays Will Kitman. “The amount of love shown, not just to myself but to every single cast member, no matter how big or small – it’s insane. Going forward, spin-off, a new season – fingers crossed, hopefully they’ll continue, too!”
“You guys have been with me, with Colin, the whole way,” said Billy Harris, who plays Colin Hughes, an AFC Richmond player who came out to his teammates in season three. “I’ve read pretty much every tweet from people who were like ‘We planted that seed in season two that there was a question mark about Colin’s sexuality’ and people were there from the very beginning. For us to round it off with Colin getting his kiss at the end, I just hope that you guys loved it because you were there with me from the very beginning to the very end, so I thank you for that.”
Kola Bokinni, who plays AFC Richmond’s captain Isaac McAdoo, said, “I want to say something to them is how grateful I am that they have stayed with my character, and how honored I have been in playing such a wonderful character as Isaac. I am happy to be your captain.”
“Thank you very much for the support, for watching Ted Lasso, for cheering us and cheering me,” said Cristo Fernández, who plays Dani Rojas. “Ted Lasso has changed my life and has given me many opportunities. It all started here and now it has given me a voice with the projects I’m developing with my film company. Whether there’s more Ted Lasso or not – if you ask me, I do want more. I want more Ted Lasso, I want more Dani Rojas moments.”
Even more AFC Richmond actors came ready to express their gratitude for Ted Lasso fans. Moe Jeudy-Lamour, who plays Thierry Zoreaux, said, “Thank you for watching, really. I think we should all strive to become as good as a person as Ted Lasso.” Stephen Manas, who plays Richard Montlaur, said, “Thanks for having this journey with us, guys, and thanks for getting this show. If it helped you at least put one smile on a little better, that’s all we wanted – to share a nice, simple, beautiful story.” David Elsendoorn, who plays Jan Maas, said, “Thank you for all the amazing support and the amazing reaction that we got – I got personally. It’s been overwhelmingly nice and I’ve just never felt more appreciated in the sense of how nice they are. They are the reason why [Ted Lasso] became such a success, so thank you.”
James Lance, known for playing journalist-turned-The Richmond Way book author Trent Crimm, said, “Thank you if you have liked Trent Crimm and that story. There’s so much love for Trent out there and it’s very moving. It’s a little bit like anybody who’s a fan of the show, they create this little love bomb. So, when someone steps out of the screen, like me, walking down the street, they’re like ‘I love you! I love the show!’ and they kind of explode. It’s evidence of just how much love there is in this and love makes love, doesn’t it?”
Jeremy Swift, who plays Leslie Higgins on Ted Lasso, quickly said to fans in his character’s own happy-go-lucky way, “Thank you very much! That’s very kind and unexpected of you.”
Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple concluded my conversations with these Ted Lasso stars, as I asked them what they want to say to the fans, who have loved their characters Rebecca Welton and Keeley Jones over these three seasons and still want to see more from them. Temple said first, “Thank you for believing!” Waddingham continued, “Well, just across the board, not just with Rebecca and Keeley, but the love that we’ve had from our fans is literally like the love from like The Beatles got and we’ve felt it every step of the way, from the first episode airing. It’s just been the most insane thing and we see it all and we hear it all and we are massively grateful.”
